Their attraction bubbles beneath the surface of the job they’ve got to do, but eventually surfaces to hit them emotionally hard. Gideon has a troubled past and he’s not looking for, or believing in commitment. Lainey believes she can change his mind, eventually.
I enjoyed this quick story. Lainey and Gideon are both quite stubborn people and the sizzle between them is quite obvious. I’d recommend this one for any Paranormal Romance or Shifter Romance reader. It’s quick, fun and sexy.
I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.
Lainey receives a disturbing call from her brother and after confirming his over-due absence with his editor she goes into full panic mode. Though the paper is sympathetic to the situation they can offer no assistance. Not knowing what else to do, she turns to someone she thought she would never speak to again, her ex who is a detective and wolf-shifter. He immediately offers his assistance, willing to contact a friend that specializes in these types of situations and she is extremely thankful. He makes it clear that he still has an interest in her, but his overbearing, controlling ways come back into play during their conversation and she shuts him down fast; not wanting to go down that road again. All she wants is help to rescue her brother from the jungles of Central America before it is too late. She has worked hard to become who she is and stand on her own. Though only one year older, she feels responsible for her brother and she will do whatever she has to secure his safe return; even if it means inviting herself along on the rescue. She did come prepared after all; she has her bag, some cash and her passport so she is ready to go.
Gideon is a tough, well-seasoned mercenary who takes no prisoners. He is a loner, by choice, and likes it that way. When he signs on for a job he wants nothing in his path to slow him down or take his concentration away from his assignment. And he definitely does not want a helpless woman thrown in the mix he has to babysit and who could possibly get them all killed. However, regardless of his harsh words or intense, dark stares she refuses to back down. He admires her independence and bravery but his hardened heart and low opinion of himself is confusion and off-putting. Through their harrowing trek through the jungle she holds her own and helps him to see there is more to him than he believes.
Thrown together by circumstance and desire can Lainey convince Gideon to give them a chance? Can she help him to see himself the way she does?
