First off, thank you Rebecca Tregaron for providing this via ARC in exchange for my honest review. None of these authors are ones I've read before so I was very excited to whet my pallet with some new authors and this anthology did not disappoint. Although this did not receive 4 stars from me, it was specifically because not all of the subject lines were ones I was really invested in. There were some minor typos throughout but nothing too glaring or that would keep me from reading more by these authors.
Bound in Silk and Steel by Rebecca Tregaron: My absolute favorite in this entire anthology! I've always loved the idea of one night a year where people can engage in activities that would otherwise seem "distasteful" without having to worry about judgment or retribution. The way the story plays out between the Queen and the spy is wonderful and I love how they play each other throughout the course of the story. I most likely would've read this as a full length book if available. There were enough descriptions of everything (clothing, scenery, persons, items) without it being overdone in any one way. I will definitely be seeking out other works by Rebecca.
Convent Discipline by Honey Dover: Interesting. I've not really read any erotica involving nuns and then all of the sudden I've had like 3 in the last couple of weeks. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about these types of scenes yet, but I'm not Catholic, nor religious in any sense, so it has nothing to do with that. I just don't know if I find the naughty nun idea to be exceptionally erotic. I felt this story was played out very well and I did enjoy the interactions between the nun and the MC, but again, I'm just not that into this type of scene. I found I enjoyed the entire punish/pleasure aspect of it if I just thought about it being two women and not with one of them supposedly being a religious authority.
Found by Victoria Janssen: I liked the story behind the erotica more than anything in this one. The Civil War is being fought and slavery has not yet been abolished. A white woman and a black woman (pretending to be a man) find each other and resolve to live life as "husband and wife" so they can be together. Very romantic but I had a hard time with their decisions in their circumstances as I didn't feel it was very realistic. But then again this is a short story and if we're only taking that into account, then it was very well done in my opinion. I just didn't care as much about their story as I did about what was going on around them.
Spanked on the Prairie by Isla Sinclair: This was my second favorite in the anthology. I don't usually like the teacher/student scenes but I think I enjoyed the fact that this was f/f, the individuals were close to the same age, and it was historical fiction so it rounded it out for me. I very much appreciated the author's ability to describe how Emily was feeling without it being too much tell and not enough show.
The Ocean's Maid by Mona Midnight: This was probably my least favorite in the story but only because of the mermaid aspect. This is very fantasy to me and I have a hard time relating in these kinds of stories. More than anything I found the scenic descriptions in the story to be the best part and I truly did enjoy that aspect and it made it totally worth it to me.
The first story, “Bound in Silk and Steel” by Rebecca Tregaron, is about a sexy young female assassin, sent to Venice to spy on, and assassinate if necessary, a powerful older woman, during Carnaval. It’s handled with a delicate touch, with some lovely details (such as the sexy lady gondolier). Of course, the spy and her mark end up having some well-written bondage, spanking and sex. There are some very clever moments in the spy-plot (which I won’t spoil here), but if you like classy, pseudo-historical, girl on girl light BDSM, you’ll love this.
“Convent Discipline”, by Honey Dover, is a simpler tale: a single scene, in which a novice nun from a rich family has to be stripped and spanked before entering the convent that she has been required to join. As such, it’s actually better wank-fodder than Bound in Silk and Steel, and I found both the psychology, and the action, believable and enjoyable.
“Found” is a much more ambitious tale, set in the American Civil War; an escaped slave is found by members of an African-American regiment, one of whom turns out to be a lesbian…it’s hard to know where to draw the line with spoilers, so I’ll shut up here. The sex action is loving lesbian stuff, no BDSM or spanking; as such, it didn’t do much for me, but the story was worth a read.
“Spanked on the Prairie” by Isla Sinclair was by far the hottest story, given my own kink preferences. It is a classic paddle spanking and caning scene, set in a Little House on the Prairie - style schoolroom. It begins with an 18 year old student bent over the teacher’s desk, with a sexy slightly older teacher about to administer a spanking. And of course, the spankee gets totally turned on, with the usual, highly erotic and enjoyable for top, bottom and reader, results.
The last story, “The Ocean’s Maid” by Mona Midnight, is a fantasy in which a woman goes to rescue her sister from the Sirens, who are mermaids. She finds her, gets seduced by the mermaid whose job that is, and stays. Not my thing at all, but it’s cleanly written, with a classic backstory. No spanking, and sex with mythical creatures just doesn’t do it for me.
For me, either “Bound in Silk and Steel” or “Spanking on the Prairie” alone would be worth the price of admission, and it’s inevitable in a compilation like this that some stories will hit your specific kink spots more accurately than others.
