Harlequin Romance # 3804 - June 2004
Contract Brides themed series
Catherine Canton thought she was in love with her fiancé Derek Danbury until she caught him with their wedding planner making out in the loft of the church on their wedding day. She then realized how naive she'd always been about Derek. It was Derek's cousin Stephen who came to her rescue and whisked her out of the church before the paparazzi got too out of hand. After all, a Danbury wedding was big news, a Danbury wedding gone a foul was even bigger news. Stephen's brooding nature has intrigued Catherine and when he confesses that he's being swindled out of his legacy of Danbury's department stores by Derek and his mother's deceit, Catherine wants very much to help him. There's a codicil to Stephen's grandfather's will that he was kept in the dark of, and now he only has two days before his 35th birthday to find a bride, or he loses control of Danbury's. Well, of course, Catherine volunteers to help. After all, Stephen will get his legacy and she'll get her revenge on her former rat of a fiancée.
This was a charming love story. After my Presents binge last month, the emotion in this one seemed rather tame. I'm sure that's only me getting used to the line change. The concept was delicious, as was Stephen, the brooding hunky hero. Catherine was very likeable and a woman to be admired. Her revenge on Derek was actually a ruse, her gut instinct told her marrying Stephen was the right thing to do. And their chemistry heated up very nicely. Ms. Braun has a lovely voice and the story flowed. A very enjoyable read!
