The year is 2026 and fourteen year-old Herbie Hunter and his mother are forced to encounter life-changing choices that are not their own. Living in Washington, D.C., with a sheltered, privileged life, where Herbie lived in his virtual reality games, when it all ends when Herbie’s father dies and they have to go live with Herbie’s grandmother, Beatrix in the town of Paradise Rift, where life is anything but privileged, where water is scarce, the town is run by an alien-watching cult named Light Seekers and everyone seems to be against Beatrix, who won’t convert to their thinking.
UFO’s, strange encounters in the desert, mysterious deaths, mind control and more add up to causing young Herbie to question, is there more going on in the town of Paradise Rift? Just like his virtual games he used to play, he follows the clues and tries to fit the pieces of the puzzle together, wondering what will he find in the end? Engaging, exciting, captivating all describe this powerful teen novel that will have readers on the edge of their seats wondering what will happen next. However, don’t let “teen novel” fool you as this is intense and exciting enough for adults to become lost in this remarkable page-turner, with powerful characters and excellent storytelling. I didn’t want the story to end and can’t wait for more in this destined to be a powerful series.
“Sometimes it takes getting battered and bruised to become the person you need to be.”
I’m actually surprised there aren’t more reviews for this book. In a sea of same old same old out there, this book delivers much-appreciated originality with twists and turns that will keep you glued to the end.
With a setting well into the future of 2026 (imagine the technology!), when Herbie’s cushy, high-tech driven life as he knew has been turned on its head, him and his mother are forced to leave D.C to live with his grandmother in an old town. A town that is not only stuck in the past and far behind on technology and proper living, but also has some strange and mysterious happenings and encounters.
Where these strange happenings should have frightened Herbie, they instead roused him. It would seem as though this was what he had been preparing for with those virtual reality games he used to play during his life of privilege.
The journey and discoveries that unfold are not only captivating and enthralling, but fascinating enough to keep you up at night flipping page after page.
With wonderfully developed characters, impeccable world-building and remarkable storytelling, Michael Warren delivered a riveting, adventurous start to what I expect to be a spectacular dystopian series.
I can’t wait to read the next one!
I enjoyed Herbie’s character, his insightfullness was well written and the story continued to pique my interested. I had a great time reading this book and I think you will as well.
