I can remember Greg Johnson's first New Zealand hit "Isabelle" almost 20 years ago, and it's been nothing but accomplished since. How someone with such a catchy mainstream pop/rock sound can go ignored commercially is one of life's great mysteries, it's probably bad promotion from record companies, but every album since that time has been at least as good as the previous one. The music does follow a formula, but it's a good one-soulful mainstream pop/soul/rock, very laid back, but in a good, not boring way. His music is perfect for summer, much better than that other, more famous artist with the same surname. It's funny how Greg Johnson has never got the same recognition as, say, Dave Dobbyn or the Finn Brothers, yet clearly he deserves to be mentioned in the same company. If you like this, I recommend all his back catalogue, particularly Seebreeze Motel, but it's hard to fault any of it, he seems incapable of making a bad album.

The first time I really payed attention to Greg Johnson was the song now the sun is out from the movie 50 pills and after searching what seemed like forever to find an album from him I found Here comes the caviar and I fell in love with this album it's a little mellow but listen to the words and you won't regret buying this album, he has a very nice sound with a lot of piano but don't let that fool you.

I must have played this CD a huge number of times and the songs consistently suck you in and have you humming or singing along. Greg manages to write unpretentious, catchy songs that fit no particular genre and have a timeless quality. He isn't one of the better known kiwi song writers but is up there there with the best! Lovely production on this CD.

Greg Johnson's latest CD is an absolute gem. It's been a long time since I've come across an album where I enjoy listening to all the songs, without getting bored. The arrangements are simple but varied and appealing, and I particularly enjoy the (acoustic) sound of Johnson's piano playing. These are inspired songs, with words that capture much of what we thirty and forty somethings think and feel. It's like Greg is one of us - I've been listening to "Here Comes the Caviar" regularly over the past six months and I'm still not tired of it. If you enjoy the music of people like Elton John and Billy Joel (the sort of stuff I grew up on), you'll enjoy this album.
