Ronald Isley had a 2003 that most artists would envy. The Isley Brothers Body Kiss went to No. 1 in its first week in the Billboard charts in the spring. Still riding that triumph, the veteran singer teamed with master writer-arranger Burt Bacharach for this set of sumptuous ballads. Such event records often made to cash in at holiday time or to lift a sagging artist profile arent always musically successful, but Here I Am is undeniable. Recording live vocals with a full orchestra in the manner of Bacharachs 60s sessions with Dionne Warwick and others, Isley brings a quietude to this selection of Bacharach-Hal David classics and a couple of new collaborations between the composer and Tonio K. "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" gets the most radical reinterpretation; no longer jaunty, its transformed into something bluer but ultimately full of hope. Here I Am, one of the more surprising albums of the year, is a true keeper. --Rickey Wright

NOTE: A better mix is the Stan Getz rendition of the wonderful track Windows of the World! By contrast, it clearly demonstrates how an Isley soprano voice, however talented, really doesn't record well with the selections on this CD.
Even though I listened to the recording on a YouTube video, it is not the same as listening to it on a very good system at home. Perhaps I'll try to listen to it at a higher volume later...
This is music and gorgeous lyrics that speak to the romantic in everybody. I do have to admit I wasn't feeling this new version of the opening song, "Alfie" (I like Dionne Warwick's much more), but after that things get better. "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" sounds like a completely different song than the B.J. Thomas take on this recorded years ago, and Ron delivers it as only he can in that famous falsetto. "In Between The Heartaches" is really good, with the modern twist that Burt has put on it...it should find its way to many Quiet Storm formats on late night radio, as several of the songs on this CD will.
Particularly worth noting are "A House Is Not A Home" and "Anyone Who Had A Heart"...WOW! Rivals the versions that Dionne and Luther Vandross had made previously. These both should be instant classics! And even Burt takes a rare turn at the microphone at the intro of "Windows of the World".
The verdict? I really enjoyed this CD and I recommend it to other fans of both (the classic) Ronald Isley and Burt Bacharach. I see a Grammy win in the future for this project!
However, this cd is so marvelously arranged, orchestrated, and produced, that even Isley's presentation cannot weigh heavily against all the attractions. So--Burt, you have done it again. You deserved the Gershwin Prize and I am offended that you were not the first to receive it. You are, without a doubt the best American songwriter of the second half of the 20th century. Your tunes are the equal of Richard Rogers, Geoge Gershwin, and Harold Arlen (all Jewish guys and Burt is Jewish too--the "genius" in "genes" is your gift to the world). And Ron--well, discount my resistance to your charms--almost everyone else recognizes your talent.

Take one of the greatest songwriters/ arrangers, plus one of the greatest singers on the planet, a bunch of great songs and the most sonically outstanding recordings I’ve heard in 30 years and it all adds up to a truly outstanding album. Glorious in every way.
