Editorial Reviews

Here Be Monsters is the latest release from Jon Langford & Skull Orchard. The album finds Jon and his band in top form with songs like Weightless, Mars, Drone Operator and Lil' Ray Of Light illustrating perfectly why he is considered an icon in the world of alternative country and a purveyor of the finest genre-agnostic rock n roll. On this release, he is joined by drummer Joe Camarillo (The Waco Bothers), fellow British expats and current Chicago residents, guitarist Jim Elkington (The Zincs, The Horse s Ha) and bassist Alan Doughty (The Waco Brothers, Jesus Jones) as well as singer/actress Tawny Newsome and vocalist/violinist Jean Cook who comprise Skull Orchard.

Several times through the samples were enough for me. Think Mike Scott/Waterboys with a dose of Uncle Tupelo/early Wilco plus some fine female back up vocals. Hasty review, but I wanted to be the first. If I change my mind on the rating or wish to supplement my assessment after listening to the entire CD, I will do so. Thank you.
Update 4-26 14: My impression of the music by just listening to the samples was on target and I have no regrets buying this CD. I changed the title and I am sticking to the 5 star rating. If I had a music store I would be obliged to file under "rock" ,but this band incorporates celtic, electronica and other music forms in a stew of swirling ecstasy. I do not know where the individual musicians hail from---the album was recorded in Chicago----it often sounds like something coming out of London or Ireland. A wonderful mix of sounds blending acoustic, electric and even horns on a few tracks. I especially like the violin of Jean Cook and the harmony vocals by Tawny Newsome. The songwriting is good and I very much like the inclusion of the lyrics on glossy cards with cool artwork on one side. I hope my follow up earns a helpful vote or two.

Great lyrics, great soul, I wish I had discovered Jon Langford sooner, great stuff! Nice raw punky folk country style, like it a lot
