The original dozen tracks clock in at just over 28 minutes, but it's 28 minutes of killer rock `n' roll, with zero filler. The first hits were "Tutti Frutti," "Long Tall Sally," "Slippin' and Slidin'," "Rip it Up," "Ready Teddy" and "She's Got It." Three more - "Jenny Jenny," "Miss Ann" and "True Fine Mama" - charted in '57 and '58. That leaves only three that didn't chart - "Can't Believe You Wanna Leave," "Baby" and "Oh Why?" - each of which has the same incendiary spark of the better known singles. The CD reissue adds three audio tracks and two videos. The audio includes Richard's two original audition tracks and a previously unreleased interview with Specialty Records founder Art Rupe. Rupe talks about the audition tape, Richard's persistence at getting signed, the New Orleans sessions, the impact of "Tutti Frutti" and the on-again, off-again career it created.
The audition tracks - Little Richard originals "Baby" and "All Night Long" - are surprising for their lack of indication of what was to come.Read more ›
But I want congratulate the producers of this reissue on doing such a great packaging job on a mid-priced CD reissue. The Specialty label is now owned by Concord Music Group (best known for it's jazz reissues) and they've given the Father of Rock and Roll a nice tribute with this package. I'm also hoping that folks who get this album, and are intrigued by the two video clips, will then check out the DVD of the film "The Girl Can't Help It!" and see the other great rock and roll stars that Director Frank Tashian (who directed Looney Tunes as well) added to the film. (And, hey, Jayne Mansfield is not too hard to look at either!)
I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.
There's not one track on this 1957 debut album that I don't consider an indispensable classic. This vinyl release from Specialty does the music justice and proves that a vinyl record doesn't need to weigh 180 grams to faithfully reproduce what the tape captured - just quality PVC and experienced engineering. The accompanying auto-rip includes a couple of interesting demos and an interview with Specialty Records founder Art Rupe. This record is essential listening and could set the sea on fire.
Unlikely as it is, if Penniman (his last name) is new to you put this disc or LP on and time yourself to the moment you can no longer sit still. It won't be long since it kicks off with Tutti Frutti and hallway through doubles you up with Slipin' & Slidin' followed by Long Tall Sally. Rock & Roll does not rock any better than Specialty era Little Richard.

This is the real thing, not Pat Boone. The energy and voice of Richard Penniman is second to none. All the hits are here. Great recordPublished 15 months ago by michael shaughnessy
