Award-winning and eight-time New York Times bestselling author Christie Golden has written nearly fifty novels and several short stories in the fields of science fiction, fantasy and horror. Among her many projects are over a dozen Star Trek novels, a similar number for gaming giant Blizzard’s World of Warcraft and StarCraft novels, three books in the nine-book Star Wars series, Fate of the Jedi, which she co-wrote with Troy Denning and the late and greatly missed Aaron Allston, and the novelization of Star Wars: The Clone Wars unaired episodes, Dark Disciple, which many reviews and lists have cited as the best of the new canon novels.

2014 saw the publication of no fewer than four novels. They were the highly successful World of Warcraft novel, War Crimes; Blackbeard: The Lost Journal, a companion book to the video game “Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag”; a second Assassin’s Creed book, “Assassin’s Creed: Unity--Abstergo Employee Handbook” and The Accidental Knight, a novel set in the world of Cryptozoic’s online card game, HEX.

2015 saw only one book published, but it was a big one- her fourth Star Wars novel, Star Wars: The Clone Wars—Dark Disciple, novel featuring the popular characters Asajj Ventress and Quinlan Vos.

In 2016, Golden revisited two favorite franchises with Warcraft: Durotan, the prequel novel to the movie, Warcraft, based on Blizzard’s games, as well as the official novelization of the film itself. November 15 sees her returning to the world of Assassin’s Creed with Assassin’s Creed: Heresy, in which she introduces high-ranking Templar Simon Hathaway, who explores history at the side of Joan of Arc. Her September short story “Promises to Keep,” in the anthology Fractures, in contrast, marks her first exploration into the world of Halo

Golden launched the TSR Ravenloft line in 1991 with her first novel, the highly successful Vampire of the Mists, which introduced elven vampire Jander Sunstar. To the best of her knowledge, she is the creator of the elven vampire archetype in fantasy fiction. Several original fantasy novels include On Fire’s Wings, In Stone’s Clasp and Under Sea’s Shadow, the first three in her multi-book fantasy series “The Final Dance”. She is delighted to see her first original novels, Instrument of Fate and In Stone’s Clasp, available in an entirely new format as online books nearly fifteen years after their original publication.

Prior to her job as prolific bestselling novelist, Golden attended the University of Virginia, where she won the Clay E. Delauney Award for Playwrighting. She worked at USA Today and served as an editor at Orbit Video Magazine and The Retired Officer Magazine. She also worked as a teacher with the Writer’s Digest School, and currently accepts clients for in-depth critiquing. You can find her at christiegolden.com, on Facebook as Christie Golden, and on Twitter @ChristieGolden.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia with stints in Michigan, Virginia, Colorado, Tennessee, and Texas, Golden has returned to Virginia for a spell.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent novel and an amazing entry into Assassin's Creed Lore
By E. Taylor on January 1, 2017
There will kind of be two different reviews here. One of the writing, the other of the publication and editing. I'll include pictures as well.
First, the story. This is an excellent novel and an amazing entry into Assassin's Creed Lore. I am a big fan of the series and have either played or am in the process of playing every game they've made so far. It's an incredible story and has such potential in a written fiction setting. They could take this world in innumerable directions and do amazing things with it. Previous attempts at novelization have been utterly disastrous. This book is not a novelization of an existing game, but a unique story set within the world. It incorporates the events in the games, the YA novels recently published and even the new movie (in a small mention of the Animus used in the movie).
The story is not quite as action-packed as I anticipated it would be, but that's not a strike against it. It is an emotional, moving story that brings up questions about who is really in the right in the battle for humanity, Assassins or Templars. It deepens the lore of the Pieces of Eden, a critical plot point of the game series. This was a wonderful book and exactly what was needed to revitalize the written world of Assassin's Creed. The writing was compelling and the story well crafted, with a fantastic twist. I think we can expect good things from future Assassin's Creed novels.
Now, on to talk about the editing and publication. This book was actually published by the Ubisoft Corporation through their shiny new Publication division. Yes this is a new venture for the company, but one would expect as much quality control and attention to detail would be given to this division as is given to their video games. Apparently this is not the case. This book is rife with editing errors, formatting errors and even a missing paragraph or two. It is shocking how much is obviously wrong with this finished product. I will include a couple pictures to my review that are just a small sampling of the problems. They do a great disservice to the author who obviously put a lot of effort into this book.
The first thing I noticed was the occasional absence of quotation marks at the beginning or end of a quote. Sometimes I had to go back and reread a paragraph once I realized it was supposed to be spoken by someone. The next thing that greatly affected the flow of the book was that section breaks were absent to let the reader know that a change of location or time has happened. In one paragraph the main character (in modern times) would be sitting in a restaurant talking to another character. The next paragraph is from the point of view of a character in the Animus in 1425, with no division. It was really jarring. The weird thing was, that in a handful of places, there were breaks. In one picture I posted, you can see a section break one the left page, and a line I drew on the right page indicating one of these jarring breaks. There were also lots of formatting errors like new paragraphs begun in the middle of a sentence and large spaces between words (as you can see in another picture I have posted.)
But perhaps the biggest problem of all was on page 130. I've posted a picture of this as well. A paragraph reads like this: "Gabriel simply shook his head. His hands were damfvfvGabriel gasped. "-way," de Metz finished." De Metz never even began whatever sentence he finished, so obviously there is text missing. This kind of error is unheard of in a proper publication.
The sheer volume of errors in this book is embarrassing. It would have simply taken one person reading the book through one time before final publication to be able to locate and correct a majority of the errors present. Someone dropped the ball, big time. It's a disservice to the author and to their readers and fans. There is a lot of potential for Ubisoft to have their own publication department because they are creators of great stories. I hope they can (very quickly) resolve the kinks in their system and turn this into a great business for them.
Final verdict:
Buy this book if you are a fan of the series. Reading it can be done with no prior knowledge of Assassin's Creed, but it will be much more enjoyable if you are familiar with the series. The story is great and really adds to and deepens the lore of the Assassin's Brotherhood and the Order of the Templars. But be aware that there are some really annoying and illusion-breaking errors in editing and publication. Buy it for the story and to support the author. You won't be disappointed in that regard.
