The Heritage Cookbook: 300+ Recipes to Help You Connect with Your Ancestry Kindle Edition

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 14 ratings

New York Times-bestselling author Russ Crandall returns with over 300 traditional recipes designed to reunite us with our recent ancestors and fill our homes with the aromas of kitchens long past.

Nearly one-third of all Americans go on some sort of diet each year, but it’s clear that a one-size-fits-all diet doesn’t always work--we are just too different from one another to follow the exact same eating patterns and see identical results. How is it that some people thrive on a vegetable-centric diet, or can drink milk without any bloating? Exciting advances in nutritional genomics research suggest that the genes we’ve inherited from our recent ancestors could have a bigger influence on our health than we once thought.

Teaming up with nutritional researcher Kamal Patel, the two break down fundamental dietary principles through the lens of genetics: the concepts behind food/gene interactions, genetic variation among specific ancestral populations, and vital or problematic foods across all cultures. To ensure that you can fully utilize this research, they also walk you through the process of tracing your family tree and taking your first genetic test to determine your unique heritage.

By navigating the complex tapestry of modern ethnic groups, The Heritage Cookbook provides a comprehensive history of humankind, from our earliest ancestors to the cultures we recognize today. The book provides a record of our planet’s major staple foods, their historical origins, health implications for specific ancestry groups, and traditional consumption rates for each ancestral region.

As with his celebrated debut, The Ancestral Table, Russ painstakingly combs through traditional and historical cuisines from every corner of the world to develop a timeless cookbook fitting for any kitchen. Featuring over 300 beautifully crafted recipes, The Heritage Cookbook presents itself in a way that lets you build a healthy and delicious diet regardless of your unique background.

Russ Crandall is the blogger, home chef, and New York Times bestselling author behind popular food blog thedomesticman.com. His award-winning recipes focus on classic, traditional, and international dishes from a historical, linguistic, and cultural perspective. A native of Washington state, he has served active duty in the U.S. Navy since 2000.

In his 20s he suffered a number of life-threatening illnesses, was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune condition, and was sent home with a lifetime's worth of medications. Disenchanted with modern medicine, Russ started searching for his own answers and quickly discovered that eating a traditional, nutrient-rich diet alleviated most of the medical issues that had plagued him for years.

His debut cookbook, The Ancestral Table, was released in 2014, and his second cookbook, The New York Times-bestselling (and 2015 Amazon.com best books of the year selection) Paleo Takeout, released in 2015. Russ has worked as a contributor to Food & Wine, Yahoo! Food, and AOL.com’s Kitchen Daily; his recipes have also been featured in People Magazine, The Huffington Post, BuzzFeed, and Mashable. His blog was a finalist in the 2013 Saveur Best Food Blog Awards. Russ lives with his wife and two children in Pearl City, HI.

Michael Pollan said there are "two dimensions to a traditional diet—the foods a culture eats and how they eat them—and both may be equally important to our health." This book is exactly what I was looking for as an immigrant, a foodie, and as someone who wants to rediscover traditional ways of eating. I am so grateful that Russ took the care and time to research and compile this amazing resource.

I am a fan of Ancestral Table and Paleo Takeout, and I can't wait to dig in to all the recipes featured here! I am especially excited to try my hand at recipes from cuisines I don't know that much about, including Africa and the Middle East. It means a lot to me that the concept of American heritage has been expanded in this book to include other nations besides Europe. I think that says a lot in today's current political climate.

Not only do I appreciate this book in how it teaches you to incorporate healthy, personalized eating habits based on your own heritage and ancestry, but I am amazed my the diversity of international recipes from all cultures and parts of the world. I don't think you can find the breadth and diversity of recipes in any other cookbook. I've made many of the recipes and they have all been delicious. Can't wait to try more!

This is such a wonderful Book. I own all 3 of his books but this by far my favorite and I hope this will be available in print at some point so I can buy that too. It gave me a better understanding of my family traditions, the regional foods I grew up with (and did not tolerate to well) my DNA results and the unexpected genetic origins of my grandparents and not to distant ancestors.

I can’t even with this book…I knew to expect something awesome, because, Russ Crandall @thedomesticman (he is the nicest, most interesting guy + his other books are family favorites)…but WOW…this book is SO MUCH more than I could ever imagine! I’m dazzled in a mix of excitement and anticipation after just spending about 20 minutes reading the summary and perusing through the incredibly rich content. I even messaged my sons about it, who all love to cook, love trying out international cuisines, and have loved the dishes that I've made for them from the recipes Russ started posting on his blog years ago! ⁣⁣ In fact, my youngest already responded with enthusiasm!

The book is divided into two major volumes: Who We Are and What We Eat (Volume 1) and The Heritage Cookbook, Volume II. From nutritional genomics & cultural history...to delicious international cuisine - what an amazing journey Russ takes the reader through! As a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, what I learn from this book can be applied to how I practice and work with clients.⁣⁣ Win-win all around.

Congratulations, Russ, well done!

Such an amazing book! If it were ONLY a cookbook, it would get 5 stars; but it is so much more. This book explores our heritage, our relationship with food, and how it all works together. Fascinating, interesting, and chock full of interesting information.

And then, there are the recipes! We have already tried several - with great success - and have the book studded with sticky notes of other recipes we are excited to try. (In fact, we have chicken simmering on the stove as we speak so we can make Avgolemono - a chicken & rice soup originating in the Balkans!)

The cookbook is big, and that may be off-putting to some, but it is very well organized, and the book lays flat when open for easy reading & reference. This is the kind of reference/cookbook that one can refer to time and time again - for specific recipes, for information, for foundation sauces, spice blends, side dishes, etc.

This is not just a cookbook, it is a wonderful tour of gastronomic history, with a healthy twist. The photography as well is top notch. When you have all the cook books from a particular author, this really means they are doing something right. If you appreciate cooking and learning along the way, this is your book.

I have lived in 9 different countries and love to cook different cuisines and this book is so impressive and authentic! I know what some of the food should be like and Russ nails it. This book is a must for anyone interested in delicious, traditional foods from around the world.
