About the author

Russ Crandall is the blogger, home chef, and New York Times bestselling author behind popular food blog thedomesticman.com. His award-winning recipes focus on classic, traditional, and international dishes from a historical, linguistic, and cultural perspective. A native of Washington state, he has served active duty in the U.S. Navy since 2000.
In his 20s he suffered a number of life-threatening illnesses, was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune condition, and was sent home with a lifetime's worth of medications. Disenchanted with modern medicine, Russ started searching for his own answers and quickly discovered that eating a traditional, nutrient-rich diet alleviated most of the medical issues that had plagued him for years.

I am a fan of Ancestral Table and Paleo Takeout, and I can't wait to dig in to all the recipes featured here! I am especially excited to try my hand at recipes from cuisines I don't know that much about, including Africa and the Middle East. It means a lot to me that the concept of American heritage has been expanded in this book to include other nations besides Europe. I think that says a lot in today's current political climate.
The book is divided into two major volumes: Who We Are and What We Eat (Volume 1) and The Heritage Cookbook, Volume II. From nutritional genomics & cultural history...to delicious international cuisine - what an amazing journey Russ takes the reader through! As a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, what I learn from this book can be applied to how I practice and work with clients. Win-win all around.

And then, there are the recipes! We have already tried several - with great success - and have the book studded with sticky notes of other recipes we are excited to try. (In fact, we have chicken simmering on the stove as we speak so we can make Avgolemono - a chicken & rice soup originating in the Balkans!)
The cookbook is big, and that may be off-putting to some, but it is very well organized, and the book lays flat when open for easy reading & reference. This is the kind of reference/cookbook that one can refer to time and time again - for specific recipes, for information, for foundation sauces, spice blends, side dishes, etc.
