Nostalgia for an Aging Computer Scientist

I bought the book as a birthday gift for my (retired) 80-year-old computer scientist professor father and have yet to read it myself, so I cannot really comment on it; however if his reaction is anything to go by, it is a winner. He read it in a day and has been talking about it (and the one on Charles Babbage that I got him to complement it) every since. :)

Not disclosed in product information, if you order a new paperback, it is a poor quality print-on-demand book. The spine is blank, no title or author, so if you want to identify the book on your shelf, you have to write it yourself. What a joke.

Good book, but the kindle version has various production issues

This is a well-written and enjoyable book. However the kindle version has various issues in formatting, with typos and run-on words, and use of the wrong font in many quotes. Worse is that while there are extensive notes, there are no footnotes or links, and the index is does not have links or locations. So while the book gets five stars for content, the kindle production gets one star.

"Herman Hollerith: Forgotten Giant of Information Processing" by Geoffrey D. Austrian is a thoroughly enjoyable and well-written biography of this quintessential pioneer in the data processing field. Austrian does a fine job of developing Hollerith's character as well as telling the story of his accomplishments, while masterfully blending in the history of the computer industry (up until 1982). A definitive, well-documented biography, sure to please both the casual reader as well as the avid history buff.
