Designed by Yves Béhar for Herman Miller
Good design, healthy support, and exceptional value are always attractive—and Sayl delivers all three. By using smart engineering to transform simple materials, Herman Miller was able to make Sayl attainable for more people.
Sayl’s unframed 3D Intelligent back lets you stretch and move, striking a healthy balance between support and freedom. The elastomer strands of the suspension back vary in thickness and tension to provide greater support in the transition areas along the spine and less everywhere else to encourage a full range of seated movement. Sayl’s unframed back and Y-Tower support create a striking visual aesthetic that reveals both the designer’s inspiration and intent.
As affordable as it is inventive, Sayl proves the belief that a reasonably priced work chair can be well designed and include leading-edge ergonomics.
Sayl's revolutionary 3D Intelligent suspension back molds the support you need into the back material, eliminating hard edges and the need for a frame. The suspension back is a flexible elastomer that adapts to each person's unique shape and provides exceptional comfort and support for just about all body types.
Designer Yves Béhar is big on environmental responsibility in design. The result is a lightweight chair that is 93 percent recyclable. Structural components are hollowed out, reducing weight and volume. The ArcSpan, arm structure, and tilt mechanism are fused into a single strong part that also reduces the chair's weight. The Sayl work chair weighs only 37 pounds.
Shape matters, especially when introducing a chair into your home. At a desk, around a table, in the living room. The organic shape of the Sayl back makes it elegant anywhere, from every angle.
Low Cost, Big Design

Over a year later and still loving this chair! My husband now spends more time in it (I've graciously acquiesced my throne habitation), and he too loves it. Again, not many bells and whistles, but truly a great chair. I still average roughly 4-5 hours a day in it (dividing time between home and work office), with an occasional 8-hour day. Continues to be comfortable and everything works as if we'd just gotten it.
It's pretty heavy and comes in a HUGE box so carbon-wise you aren't saving the planet with this one. And I felt bad for the UPS guy since it had to come up a flight of stairs.
This version has no adjustments - You can get more ability to adjust by paying more but this is the "bottom of the line" model.
On the plus side assembly is a snap - it comes in two pieces (which is why the box is so big). And the back makes for a much smaller looking chair which aesthetically is much better (and something I hope the other folks learn from).
So in our "find the best office chair" contest in our office and this was rejected quickly by everyone and they didn't even consider the cost. Everyone preferred [#1 Alera Elusion Series Mesh High-Back Multifunction Chair, Black, and #2 Deluxe Chair with Latte Air Grd Seat and Back].
It appears the foam pad is glued on the support so it is not easily replaceable (like on the more expensive Aeron chair). The arm pad is a poor design. Now my chair with be sporting some sweet duct tape on the armpad. Classy.
I would recommend that you do not purchase this chair and instead upgrade to the Aeron. I guess it is true that you get what you pay for. I went cheap with the Sayl and I am now regretting it.
Then I looked on Amazon and this Herman Miller chair was an amazing price. I work @ home and I am usually sitting at my desk for hours. The last chair I had did my back in. After just a few hours of sitting on my old chair, my back and hips would be terribly achy and sore. I tried numerous pads on that chair but none helped. So I began my search for a comfortable, supportive chair.
Several of the Amazon reviews on this chair mentioned how comfortable and supportive it was so I figured why not get it. If it didn't work for me I could return it. The chair arrived within a few days. I was so impressed how fast I assembled it; basically you pop the top of the chair onto the bottom, then sit on it and adjust it to your height. The arms are NOT adjustable, but they are perfect for me and are fine for my desk. Now I can sit @ my desk for hours without pain or aches. This chair is priceless -- worth every penny. Furthermore whenever someone sees it they immediately say "wow that is cool". The design looks awesome and its so comfortable! I highly recommend it.
