What is a hero bird? I had never heard the term before either until my good friend, Cat Pleska, told me about this remarkable book and what a hero bird really is. It is a military helicopter, usually a Black Hawk or Chinook, with its soul mission to go and return the body of our deceased service personnel who have lost their lives in the service of their country. With this mission assignment the aircraft are designated, "Hero Birds".
Captain Furner is a United States Army Chaplain and a native of Parkersburg, West Virginia. He has written this book as a tribute and a testament to the flight crews, medical crews, and mortuary teams that oversaw the safe return home of military personnel, as well as civilian casualties of the war in Afghanistan. It is a moving first person account of what a mission of this type entails and an emotional tribute to the men and women who take on these missions to make sure that no one is ever left behind.
I encourage everyone to read this extraordinary book and to go along with Captain Furner as he personally makes sure all the fallen return home to their loved ones with the honor, loyalty and respect they deserve.
