The Hero Code: Lessons Learned from Lives Well Lived Hardcover – April 13, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
From the acclaimed, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Make Your Bed—a short, inspirational book about the qualities of true, everyday heroes.
THE HERO CODE is Admiral McRaven's ringing tribute to the real, everyday heroes he's met over the years, from battlefields to hospitals to college campuses, who are doing their part to save the world.
When Bill McRaven was a young boy growing up in Texas, he dreamed of being a superhero. He longed to put on a cape and use his superpowers to save the earth from destruction. But as he grew older and traveled the world, he found real heroes everywhere he went -- and none of them had superpowers. None of them wore capes or cowls. But they all possessed qualities that gave them the power to help others, to make a difference, to save the world: courage, both physical and moral; humility; a willingness to sacrifice; and a deep sense of integrity.
THE HERO CODE is not a cypher, a puzzle, or a secret message. It is a code of conduct; lessons in virtues that can become the foundations of our character as we build a life worthy of honor and respect.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"Fascinating...McRaven's war stories deliver remarkable insight into the life of a wartime leader."
―Publishers Weekly
"Engaging...Sea Stories is more than an autobiography, more than a narrative of recent military history, and more than the sum of one remarkable man's experiences. In his excellently flowing prose...McRaven not only allows readers the opportunity to vicariously experience daring adventures and the command of elite warriors heading into harm's way, he also shares practical everyday wisdom."―Booklist (Starred Review)
"Sea Stories, a well-written book that reads like a thriller, covers some of the most important historical actions taken by Navy SEALs and other special operators."―The Washington Times
"Should be read by every leader in America... [MAKE YOUR BED] is a book to inspire your children and grandchildren to become everything that they can. It is a book to discuss with your executive leadership team as a spur to meeting shared goals. Most of all, it is a book that will leave you with tears in your eyes."―Wall Street Journal
"Full of captivating personal anecdotes from inside the national security vault...McRaven's lessons, like his commencement speech, extend far beyond his bed-making. He devotes the 10-chapter book to lessons about moving beyond failure, standing up to bullies and giving others hope."―Washington Post
"McRaven...has taken the genesis of what he learned during SEAL training and his nearly four decades in Navy Special Operations into a thin, powerful book."―USA Today
"Exquisitely simple...superb, smart, and succinct."―Forbes
"Readers interested in the essential work of military special forces will be inspired by McRaven's adventures."―Kirkus
"Spellbinding."―Texas Monthly

- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2025I have read two of McRaven's books. Both were read cover to cover absorbing the great leadership and life advice he shared. Easy reading because of the engaging storytelling he uses to uncover the point he is making. Pass this on to youth, aspiring leaders and really anyone who might be seeking more out of their life.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2025I love this book, the stories in it the teachings and morals are top tier I highly recommend for any reader of any age.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2025This, for me is part of a series, the full writings of Admiral William H. McRaven. I am Israeli, and as such my country has been in war for the past year and five months. I have been touched by every word, laughed, cried and most of all hoped that this and any other book written by this extraordinary man will not end.
I learned to forgive. Most of all. Which has not been easy after what has transpired in my country in the past two years. I am inspired, at awe and I walk through life changed by this man’s legacy. I love this book. As a mother to a future special ops soldier in the Israeli military, I hope this legacy will be part of his special ops training.
I wish we all had to read this at school and live by it, the world would have definitely been a better one. Grateful to have taken the time and for every word in this book 🙏
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2025A Great but easy read. It demonstrates how very ordinary people can be heroes by following the basic rules of life.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2023This is a collection of short stories that exemplify each of the elements of what William McRaven calls "The Hero Code". Elements like "courage" and "duty" are showcased in personal stories that McRaven has taken from his career and shared with us in this inspiring and sometimes heart-wrenching look at what it takes to be a hero.
This book reminds me of John F. Kennedy's book, "Profiles in Courage". People from all over the world and all walks of life are highlighted in this book and their stories won't be lost to time.
McCraven does a wonderful job of exemplifying the elements of the Hero Code while putting the spotlight on those he's come in contact with that have inspired him to embrace those characteristics. Read this book and be inspired!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2025A truly inspiring set of thought provoking set of stories examining the values that true heroes demonstrate in their lives every day and how we can incorporate those values into our lives.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2025I would recommend this book to everyone! I think it would be an excellent read for middle schools and up. I wish our country promoted this type of character development. The world would be a better place. Thank you for your service and your book, Admiral McRaven
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2024I loved the personal stories the Admiral told, and how they illustrated the “Hero Code of each chapter!
This book is good for anybody. It can help us find the humble hero inside of all of us! I wish my dad was still alive, so that I could give him this book to read. He served in the Navy, aboard the USS Mugford in World War II.
His life affirmed everything Admiral McRaven wrote about! Thank you, Admiral McRaven!

Je suis admirative des personnes comme L'amiral MCRAVEN et le regretté John MCCAIN qui ont été des Grands et ont transmis leur amour et respect de la patrie dans leur vie et leurs écrits.

I had my grandson to read it too.
PapReviewed in Canada on April 22, 20215.0 out of 5 stars Great lessons presented in a clear and easy to follow way.
Great read. The lessons in this book are ways to live your life that anyone can apply. Doesn’t matter if you’re a CEO of a Fortune 500 company, trying to teach your children how to approach the world, or are a student trying to figure out the rest of your life. The messages are simple (but not easy).
It’s not every day that 170 or so pages can have such a big impact on how to live your life. Highly recommend this book.
