Sometimes “handlers and their K-9s are asked to find a suspect that has run away.” The K-9 officer has been taught to listen to the handler in order to “stop the suspect.” Perhaps you’ve seen one of them on television doing his or her job. They do all kinds of things, but they are “very well trained.” They can look for evidence, search for suspects, and even climb walls! You’ll get to check out the many different types of dogs that are selected to be law enforcement dogs. Can you guess which types of dogs would be used and why?
The K-9 officer is often used as a “bomb-detecting” dog because they “have an amazing sense of smell.” If you look at the photographs of these dogs, you’ll soon discover they have something in common. They tend to be “labradors and other retrievers” because they are great at detecting smells! In fact, “some dogs can smell things a half mile (0.8 kilometers) away!” In this book you’ll get a chance to check out many K-9 police officers and learn about their jobs. You’ll learn how they work, how they are trained, and how they keep us safe.
This is a great book about K-9 officers that young animal lovers will love reading. For the most part, young readers only see K-9 dogs in action on television. This book is a marvelous way for them to learn about and become acquainted with their work. The layout features loads of photographs for them to check out as the dogs work. There are numerous informative captions that add to the text. For example, when learning about arson-detecting dogs, we learn that “it can take humans days to do the work an arson-detecting dog can do in less than thirty minutes.” In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, and additional recommended book and website resources to explore. There are free complementary downloadable resources on the publisher’s website.
