The star of HBO(r)'s Generation Kill and the real-life warrior from the New York Times bestseller presents his "Hero Living" plan.
In his publishing debut, Rudy Reyes introduces his philosophy of "Hero Living": part Homer, part Joseph Campbell, part Bruce Lee, and part Spider- Man. The various stages in the journey aim to bring forth the hero within: recognizing the hero's call, following the hero's path, and returning from life's battlefield with the hero's hard-earned wisdom.
Taking readers step-by-step through his program, Reyes draws from his own heroic story of how he triumphed over his harrowing childhood experiences of poverty and abandonment. Rather than giving up hope, he heeded the hero's call to live up to his full potential-first as a martial-arts champion, then as an elite warrior in the mountains of Afghanistan and on the sands of Iraq, and finally in his post-Marines life as a personal trainer, actor, and motivational speaker.

This book changed my life. Rudy Reyes is such an inspirational man in real life, but his journey within the pages of this book is nothing short of phenomenal. His will to not only survive, but thrive is amazing! He is the epitome of a Hero. He challenges you, gives you the steps to follow to make the changes in your life to live like a Hero...all the while giving you his story from the obstacles he overcame as a child to his unbelievable days as a Recon Marine and finally, the battle he conquered after coming home. His life is nothing short of a miracle. It picked me up off of the floor and inspired me to keep pushing!

Although this is a self-improvement book, I mostly enjoyed his various experiences in life that made him into a warrior like no other. When life struck Rudy harder then anyone can fathom, Rudy found the courage to overcome these obstacles no matter what the circumstances were. He is an amazing positive role model for all ages. He is a unique person that I've gotten the chance to meet / work with and I'm honored. Out of all the services, Marines usually don't take long to get along and complete the task at hand. With that said, Rudy used his traits "tools" that made him successful and now passes on the knowledge to help others pursue happiness and breaking the loop of Samara (the loop of suffering). Most of the folks that I work with use the 7 strides on a daily basis without even knowing it (mainly because of our military background and the industry that I'm in). Rudy helps reinforce and provides a reality check so that you can assess your current situation to awaken your infinite power and ultimately being your own Hero.
I'm a former Marine that has had a combat tour in Iraq and coincidentally got a chance to work with Rudy as a civilian. At one point, he was hired by HBO to work as an adviser to Generation Kill. But because Rudy was so special it was impossible for any actor to portray Rudy correctly so he got hired on to play himself. He is truly a unique person and I hope that one day you get a chance to meet him to understand what I mean.

Rudy is great, and even if you didn't serve in an elite military unit, you'll still get everything he's saying!

Unemployed, overweight, uninspired are all words that describe this last year of my life. Mr. Reyes has been a beacon for me as I come out of this cycle of Samsara: "the loop of suffering." Feeling as though my life raft was caught in a Samsara tsunami, Mr. Reyes stretched out his hand for me to grasp: both of us pulling me out of that quagmire, ultimately collapsing on the shore, beaten, starving, but alive. His book "fed" me and his words helped remind me of Who I Am. He gave me the tools to fix my raft and now, revived, with my "toolkit" in hand, he gently yet firmly has pushed my raft back on its course. Certainly this review's ideas are metaphorical, but Rudy has inspired me like no other. I have recently started my own business, quit smoking, am eating healthier than I ever have, and recently begun martial arts training @ Five Points Academy in NYC. It is the hardest and most rewarding thing I have ever done. I absolutely recommend this book for people not only interested in knowing the path, but walking the path as well.

Before I begin, Rudy Reyes is the man.
The book is a good blend of Rudy's life experiences and a great guide to awakening one's self to living life on the Hero's path. If you are feeling down, need to find the positive energy in yourself, or you are just looking for change in your life, then this book is a great read. Hero Living is not necessarily a book you will want to read overnight, but it points out ways that you can begin examining "Who I am" in the now and you can begin your journey on the Hero's path immediately.
The book is easy to read and applies to people from all walks of life. While reading, I would suggest a pen and paper for your thoughts as well as some time in a quiet place to examine your thoughts as you begin to sharpen yourself on the Hero's whetstones.
If nothing else, read the book and realize "I am a Hero now".

This book is really lovely. I really like Reyes's approach and I appreciate his generosity of spirit.
His own story could be heartbreaking but he neither wallows in it nor uses it as a yardstick, but only as a series of real-life examples of his life philosophy. He's really clear about honoring each person's journey and being without judgment -- just start where you are.
And unlike a lot of new-agey sort of advisors, he absolutely acknowledges obstacles, but puts them in a slightly different perspective. His Eastern influences are clear and acknowledged, and it's kind of awesome that his earliest role models were Bruce Lee and comicbook superheroes.
What purity of heart this guy has.
I'm so glad I bought this book. I never buy anything in the "self help" genre, but I was intrigued by his story, after having seen him on the HBO series Generation Kill, and this turned out to be a great purchase and much more than a "self help" book. It's really a book about self-knowledge, as I should have expected.

One of the best motivating books on self development
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 7, 2021Verified Purchase
I wish I had this book when I was at 18; this book resonates truth. Self development and the development of the authentic self, broken down into simple (yet deeply complex) stories and observations. An Alpha male proving there are no Alphas; just you, and the simplicity of your breath, extrapolated to the Quantum of your Being.
Rudy is a warrior poet, who adds art into his tremendous skill sets which will help you; and thus, everything.
If you are in a Rut or a Negative Loop, this book will give you the impetus to vibrate with the universe. Amen to Rudi.

Rudy Reyes is the man!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 11, 2015Verified Purchase
You've got to love Rudy Reyes. This is more of a personal account of his life rather than a self-help book, per se. There are steps you can use to envision a better future. However, I found this more inspirational in terms of Rudy's journey through life. It gave me an outstanding respect for the man.

Enjoyed this book . So much wisdom , insight and what an example of a real life hero in Rudy who fought all odds to emerge a warrior in every sense . Rudy covers the nightmare of being abandoned , uncared for as a child with rotting teeth and growing in a boys home go come back with confidence and hope va being broken and lost - that by itself was heroic for me . Thanks Rudy .

Tolles Buch !!!
Reviewed in Germany on March 23, 2014Verified Purchase
