About the author

David grew up in a small, lakeside town in Michigan. His passion for art and adventure pulled him Eastward where he trained as an illustrator at University of the Arts in Philadelphia and worked for a short time in New York City making computer games. He is currently back in Michigan where he spends his days tackling children’s books, book covers, games, and anything else he can get his hands on.

This is certainly a storybook, so if you are looking for a Biblical account, this might not be for you. Not that stories stray greatly from the Bible, but they are more synopsis with few details. For example, in the Joseph book, it mentions he has "a lot" of older brothers... clearly the specific detail of a number is too much...
I was also glad to see that Esther was included in this collection. Too often the heroes of the Bible are all male- granted there are few women to really pick from in comparison to the men. And I was also relieved to see that Jesus wasn't one of the heroes. Too often when we refer to Jesus as a hero in books we equate Him with the heroes of fiction and movies, and let's be honest, that is just not a good comparison.
My son really enjoyed the little recaps at the end of each book. The quick little summary of the characters and "did you know?" facts really grabbed his attention.
**** Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher, Zonderkidz, and BookLook Blogger. I was not required to write a positive review. The stories are a good length. This book is only a few pages short of two hundred, each story about thirty pages long. Even though it might seem quite lengthy for a child who is learning to read, it isn't, each story is the perfect and the child feels quite accomplished when they complete each story.
My second grader was thrilled when this book arrived in the mail and immediately began thumbing through the pages, enjoying the pictures and looking to see which Bible stories it contained.
He was most excited about Noah's Voyage, and read that first. He also couldn't wait to begin Paul Meets Jesus because he is learning about Paul in our family Bible study.
The six stories included in this hardcover are:
Paul Meets Jesus
Brave Queen Esther
Joseph The Dreamer
Noah's Voyage
Elijah, God's Mighty Prophet
Moses Leads The People
What I appreciate about these stories is the author's attention to detail. Generally children's books skip a lot of detail because they are teaching the basics and just trying to get the main idea across. This is understandable for toddler books, maybe, but we often don't give children credit for what they can understand. If we present them with the facts, then at least they are exposed to it. They may not remember every, single, detail but at they oftentimes absorb so much more than we realize.
For example, the story of Noah includes how old Noah was when he built the ark, how many days the ark rested before they left the ark and the fact that the ark rested on the mountains of Ararat. It is very close to the actual biblical account but written in a way that a beginning reader can read it.
Of course not every little detail can be included and my son picked up on this. In the story of Esther, my son noticed that only one feast that Esther held for the king was mentioned, not two. He also picked up on the fact that in the actual biblical account, the last dove that Noah sent out never returned but the last bird mentioned in this book was the dove with the olive branch.
Overall, I highly recommend this book for beginning readers. My son felt confident reading these beloved stories and looks forward to more opportunities to do so.

The illustrations are colorful and really help keep my son’s attention. It’s easy to include colors, facial expressions, and what is that’s in our lessons just using the photos.
This book does contain some scenes that children may find scary such as the scowls on the Pharoh’s face, the ten plagues, and the mention of death. These did not bother my zombie loving child, but are worth mentioning.
We found the stories to be a good length for his attention span as well. I think the names are the most challenging thing for young readers, names such as: Mordecai and Ananias. Their are some more complex words in this book to challenge older children such as: Isrealites and baptized. My son enjoyed trying to pronounce these and we made it fun.
At the end of each chapter their is a bit about each of the main characters, helping children not only learn about the story but the person.I received this product for free in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
