Who are the hottest Japanese video game and animation heroes and heroines? This is a most up-to-date collection of 100 prominent character designers of video games and animation created in 2010 and 2011. No other book collects as many professional works as this book. For game and animation fans, this book allows a comprehensive look at a variety of characters from a range of video game titles, as well as the work of character designers. Designers featured in this book include Shigenori Soejima, Suzuhito Yasuda, Mel Kishida, redjuice, Masayoshi Tanaka, Makoto Tsuchibayashi, aokiume, Takahiro Kishida, Eiji Kaneda, and more. Interviews with Shigenori Soejima ("Catherine," "Persona 3," and "Persona 4") and Eiji Kaneda ("Rezel Cross") make this the definitive book on Japanese video game design.

This book is a sample platter of art in video games and animation (of recent fame). Each page has a brief paragraph intro to the artists and where the work(s) comes from.

Personally, I find the title perfectly describes the art book. It is a great tool for fleshing out an artistic direction and main character design while being a good reference for posing.

However, don't expect a traditional breakdown of a character's development drafts and design notes) as this is arguably a collection of promotion pieces and finalized concept art.

Again, this book serves as a launching point to current popular artists and does a fantastic job of doing so.

I bought this for an Xmas gift for my son who love drawing. He was extremely pleased with the book because of the collections.
Nice printing- excellent quality.

The book has a lot less content than I hoped. This isn't a design book, which I had hoped. What I refer to are those great Japanese art books which contain a lot of production sketches and designs. This book is really more of a final character photo / poster photo book. The art included for many anime series and games is the art designed for the covers of the cases.

Still, it's nice to check it all out. But I had hoped for some 'rougher' pictures instead of just a lot of cut and paste final designs.

The other reservation is that the book is printed left to right, not the right to left style used in Japan. It doesn't appear that they mirrored the images (the Kanji on a couple of character shirts is still the correct way and not mirrored). It seems they just flipped pages, so normally you have (imagine the slash as the crease in the book):

imageA on page 1 / imageB on page 2

and they flipped so it is:

imageB on page 1 / imageA on page 2

But I have been happier with actual Japanese design and art books specific to particular artists or series instead.

I love all the artwork in this. I bought it as a reference guide to get some clothing ideas for comic/manga characters and this gave a wide variety to chose from.

It could serve as a guide or reference. I felt there was lacking more “images” I guess it wouldn’t hurt the editors to include a little more pictures. However this is kinda nice. If your are looking for an art book, this is not it.

Great references on how the jappanese character's creators are conceiving the current generation of games and tv characters. Strongly recommended for character designers.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is awesome! My husband will love it!

I have gotten this for my husband for Christmas and I better wrap it fast before he senses Japanese gaming sketches and tries to get it early!
This is a beautiful book, the front cover with Catherine on is a bit sparkly/hologram-ish too which is a nice touch, if you take the sleeve off it's a plain white book so you can read it on the train without people assuming it's porn (as Catherine is a little chesty looking there lol)
Inside looks beautiful too, so many different games that I recognise mainly because of the damned husband playing them/watching them 24/7, so this should give his eyes a break from staring at computers for a while lol
I'm really pleased with it, also the Japanese and English translations are nicely laid out, he's fluent in Japanese and English so this will also be good for him to read either of the languages with and keep them both fresh in his mind, as England doesn't have much Japanese text about for him to read lol
Must... hide.... this... amazing... present... before... he... finds... it!!!

It's well worth the money for what it is, and if you love gaming, sketches, Japan, and just plain awesome then this is for you!

Me compre este y el "more heroes and heroines" y ambos me encantaron
