Review
The text itself is broken up by the author's own hand-drawn illustrations in black-and-white cartoon style. To encourage further interest in heroic stories, there is a list of references and recommended hero stories included In the back of the book. Youth who are aspiring writers or enjoy heroic tales may be interested in learning about what connections they can find in their favorite works or their own creations. Educators may find this book extremely useful as the prompts at the end of each chapter would likely lend well to classroom or small group discussions. Recommended.

Zachary Hamby set out on a journey to teach the young andold about the fascinating human concept of the hero's journey. Through excellent descriptive writing, wonderful illustrations, and relatable examples Hamby breaks down the keyelements of the hero's journey into easily understandable steps. Anyone could use this book as a steppingstone to writing their own hero story or to gain better insight into theirfavorite heroes and their own lives.
This book allows the reader to see the Hero's Journeythrough multiple lenses including their favorite heroes' stories, theircreative writing, and most importantly their own journey in life. I would highly recommend this book tostudents, teachers, and anyone who would like to learn more about theinterconnected elements that make up the Hero's Journey and how they can createa hero of their own.

From the Inside Flap
When choosing which stories to include, I tried to pick ones with which most readers would be familiar. But even if you are not familiar with a particular book or movie, don't worry. I will give you enough of the details so you can still understand the example. As you read along, I'll also encourage you to think of a hero story that's special to you.You might be surprised what you find hidden within it! The journey awaits!

- Examples for each stage of the journey from mythology, classic stories, and modern pop culture that will make it easy for students to grasp. In fact, on one page, there are allusions to Aladdin, Hercules, Star Wars, Cinderella, Norse mythology, The Little Mermaid, and Harry Potter.
- Guiding questions for each section that encourage students to think about where they have noticed this element before in movies, games, and books. The questions are centered around a hero of the student’s choosing so that they will be invested even more.
- Writing tips for every stage and section of the journey so that students can apply what they are learning in their own stories. A teacher could easily build a whole creative writing unit around the hero’s journey using this book’s writing tips.
- Original illustrations by Hamby that are pleasing to look at and make the overall feel of the book fun and inviting.
- A recommended reading list for great hero stories.
The book is a good length for teenage students’ attention spans (just over 100 pages). Plus, Hamby doesn’t just present the material, he talks to the reader and engages the students to apply what they are learning along the way. I’m excited about working it into my yearly lesson plans for my mythology class, ninth-grade curriculum, and in my summer creative writing camp. Campbell is dry – Hamby is awesome! I’ve bought other materials from him before and have never been disappointed with my purchase. This is no exception.
Zachary Hamby
The following review can best be summed up in the following manner - Zachary Hamby has done it again.
Following on the heels of the remarkable Reaching… series of books, which bring a multitude of ancient myths into an engaging and easily-digestible form for modern adolescents, Hamby has released The Hero’s Guidebook - a slim tome that does the same for Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey. Over 20 years in the classroom, I have utilized aspects of the monomythic quest of the hero in various forms. In this work, Hamby provides the tools I’ve been looking for - making the complexities of mythic storytelling accessible to the younger audience.
Part mythology textbook, part writer’s guide, and part guide to life, Hamby diligently condenses the key elements of the Hero’s Journey into a detailed, yet simplified overview of the content. Tackling each stage of the journey with numerous examples both popular and obscure, the reader is walked through the adventure alongside the model hero of his or her choice, seeing as archetypes are unpacked and symbols are explored. Along the way, Hamby helps guide the budding adventure writer with suggestions and tips for including each stage of the journey in their own work, while also connecting the lessons learned by the mythic hero to those we learn in real life.
This connection to real life is by far the most appreciated portion of the book. In my decade-plus of using the monomyth in my classroom, this has always been an area where I struggled to connect with students. Hamby accomplishes this connection with open and honest communication. He speaks TO his young readers - not DOWN to them - clarifying each concept by connecting it with a child’s knowledge. As modern educators work to build emotional engagement with the content, this book shows us how to do it. And the amusing illustrations (check out Medusa on page 55) simply add to the reader’s enjoyment.
The Hero’s Guidebook is a definite winner for the mythology educator. My copy is already heavily annotated for use in my classroom - the overhauling of my existing curriculum has begun!
Zachary Hamby in his new book, The Hero’s Guidebook, has been able to incorporate all of my hopes for my students into one, easy-to-read and understand guidebook. Not only does the book give some excellent examples of modern day heroes, it walks through the “steps” as Joseph Campbell listed them and gives excellent thinking and writing prompts for the students to develop into their own short hero stories. Each step is written in a form which lends itself to easy reading. Towards the end of each chapter, after giving several examples from movies and books, Mr. Hamby juxtaposes it against current choices most probably happening in the students’ lives right now--again, good suggestions about which to write! This section is called, “Your Journey,” and I plan to use it for a “reflection” piece for the students to write about and put into a journal. Other teachers might use this a basis for group or whole-class discussions!
I heartily recommend this book to the ELA teacher looking to explain the Hero’s Journey to children and looking for ideas about which to write--reflection pieces, journaling, short stories--it’s all there! Enjoy!
