First of all, I never really got a good handle on Olivia. Half of the time it talked about her being a certain character (doesn't like new people, etc.) but then never showed that. It was like the author wanted other people to see her one way and presented that but never actually showed that to be true. She did the same thing with Cole. Apparently, he was too "rigid" and had "high expectations" of people. Yet, it never showed him actually being rigid and his high expectations were . . . honestly and loyalty? Yup, too much to ask for.
Olivia has spent the majority of the book agonizing about whether to tell Cole about her past and knowing that he will likely be very upset about her lying to him and thinks their relationship will immediately be over. Then, when he overhears about her past and is upset, she tries to explain but says she knew he wouldn't listen. Well, that's what you thought the entire time so why are you mad at him? You should have been honest in the first place, like you mentioned umpteen times. Then, the misunderstanding becomes Cole's fault because he doesn't listen to her and let her explain. No one gives him any time to process this. Second, the whole thing with Cole's friends and Gil was really annoying. Why was he in the wrong? They spend two years knowing something that would hurt him and don't tell him and get mad at HIM when he walks away. He had a right to be angry, except in this universe, where he's an ***hole for being upset.Read more ›
I love the way Cole's character was set up. He's not your typical alpha male hero, though still with some alpha tendencies to make it interesting. But he has so many other great and intriguing qualities, that he really made for a terrific hero for me to read about. I loved that he wanted to help Olivia (and anyone else he sees), but slowly he also becomes aware of the things he needs to deal with in his own life. Also, seeing him alongside Sam and Tanner, as well as his mother and sisters, really rounded out his well-meaning, flawed, but heartsy personality.
Olivia was also a fun, unique character to get to know. She has such a strength about her, yet the walls and secrets she has built around her don't hide her kind nature and tender spirit.Read more ›
That said, the Lucky Harbor series is about tapped out.
He's So Fine tells the story of former child star Olivia (who used to be Sharlyn, but she changed her name when her career in Hollywood imploded and she moved to Lucky Harbor to make a fresh start) and charter fishingboat captain Cole. Cole grew up in Lucky Harbor, taking care of his mom and his three sisters, and he has a reputation in town as the guy who can fix anything. Everybody loves Cole, but Cole holds grudges like nobody's business. Two years ago at his best friend's funeral, he learned that his girlfriend betrayed him by falling for the dead friend, and that betrayal has festered ever since, leaving Cole unable to trust anyone. Because of his trust issues, his relationship with Olivia is doomed before it ever gets off the ground, because by not telling him about her sordid past and her grasping relatives and her birth name, Olivia hasn't been honest with him (never mind that she doesn't tell anyone those things). When the truth comes to light, Cole predictably gets all butt hurt and walks away.
The Lucky Harbor series is organized into trilogies within the series.Read more ›
