Published originally as History Bulletin II by the New York State Library, this work is composed of two parts: (1) a miscellaneous record of deeds, mortgages, bonds, powers of attorney, and depositions running from January 10, 1658 to November 4, 1660; and (2) a series of wills, inventories, and settlements of estates from January 5, 1681 to October 30, 1765. The contents, which were abstracted from records found in the Albany County clerk's office, were translated from the original Dutch by Jonathan Pearson and readied for publication by A.J.F. Van Laer. The deeds, mortgages, and related property records have the virtue of tracing the chain of title to real estate from one colonist to another. The wills, inventories, and settlements of estates, which comprise about half of the volume, were translated from a manuscript volume in the clerk's office entitled Wills, Part 1 & 2, 1691-1835; however, only those wills written in Dutch are included here. The remainder may be found in the [New York] Calendar of Wills, compiled by Berthold Fernow, which is also available from Clearfield Company. The wills, of course, not only disclose the disposition of property but also divulge the names of two or more generations of persons connected to each decedent. In all, the index to this volume holds the key to the identities of several thousand 17th- and 18th-century inhabitants of Albany and Rensselaerswyck.

This paperback is a copy of the original (a photocopy ? & the footnotes are deleted). Unfortunately, the appendix, illustrations, & footnotes (designated in the original with an *) are NOT included. I did not notice in the Amazon description that the paperback was a much shorter version of the hardcopy; i just assumed it would be similar to the 1975 reprint I borrowed from my library. Sadly, it wasn’t. The copyright/publishing page says only “First published by Harper & Brothers on 1884. Copyright Edward J. Lowell. This edition published in 2016.” Who published this text in 2016 is unknown. So, buyer, beware. It could be a useful text if all the reader wants to know is the military history; however it is the map illustrations of the battles & the references that make it an exceptional resource.

This is a 19th Century work in which the author has drawn on first hand sources of Germans who were in the US during the American Revolutionary war. One of those quoted is a Baroness, who was in America with her General husband and their three small daughters.

The German mercenaries are shown to have gotten a pretty raw deal, as some didn't have much choice in the matter. They weren't always fed the best either, and discipline could be severe.

It says a lot that the English government would rather use mercenaries, than raise more British soldiers.

It covers recruiting practices of the different German princedoms to the battles and the effect the AWI had on the German units when only 58% returned to Europe. The remainder were causalities or settled here. No, no uniform information or unit organization if that is what you're looking for. Rather a look at the attitudes towards the Germans in the war and their combat performance.
