I liked the idea of witches and their shifter familiars. I liked the world-building, which was never obvious but I still understood the politics and hierarchies of the world. The writing was mostly wonderful. One of my few complaints is that I thought it faltered into clunky, almost cheesy prose sometimes, but mostly not. My only other real criticism is that the sex scenes felt quite abrupt and a little out of character for where the characters were, emotionally at the time.
t's a complete story too, no cliffhanger and I didn't feel I was missing information having not read the prequel. Gotta appreciate that. I've read a couple Hawk books now and I've been happy with each one. I look forward to more.
Yes, the romance is a sort of a fairytale by definition (after all, what's more magical than love?) so there will be some very, very hot happy endings in the story. Still, Hexworld does not shy away from exploring the problems, abuses, and the inherently challenging power structure created by the magical imperative at the center of the narrative. The premise may be supernatural, but the surrounding social issues - and the author's empathetic, intelligent exploration of them - felt current, immediate, and resonant. The ideas of striving for freedom within an imbalanced social structure, of compromise in the face of never-ending conflict, of carving out one's place among people with differing beliefs and values, even the very privilege of being able to remain blind to injustice affecting others... all of these topics sound very real and true to a contemporary reader. After the prequel and this novel, I have complete faith that this series will continue to treat the issues - and the characters who embody different sides of the key concept - with care, attention, and profound honesty. This approach is what creates a sense of realism at the heart of a fantastical story, which may be glimmering with excitement and thrill at first glance, but is also grounded by some very believable human struggles, aspirations, and emotions. I can't wait to read more! (P.S. and I'm soooo looking forward to Owen's book! :D)
Jordan L. Hawk has built another incredible world for our enjoyment. Tom and Cicero are completely opposite but still drawn to each other. Watching them fight it makes for some great reading as does the opposite. Both men have some decision to make that could jeopardize their relationship even as they realize that solving their case is imperative to the safety of New York. Exciting, with edge of the seat suspense, Hexbreaker should definitely be added to your list. Put it at the top. That is where it should be.
So there's a cool world, with crime-fighting, and social conflict as Familiars are sometimes treated as second-class citizens and there's some Witch/non-Witch tension as well. And of course there is romance and love at the core.
This story concerns beat-cop Tom, who has secrets to hide, but a murder that needs solving. Familiar Cicero discovers that Tom is his Witch--meaning he's one with magical abilities that would best match with his own, making them both better at magic. Mystery, danger, and passion ensue!
