The story was interesting because Heather Graham gives a lot of details about the surrounding areas in her books and I like that history. There is danger, a love story, numerous victims, Krewe of Hunters investigators that were in the earlier books and a host of her characters that we learn about.
I had figured out who the killer was before the end but not so far ahead that it ruined the suspense for me. You can read this book as a stand alone but I have enjoyed the entire series so I have read the books in order. I would recommend this series.
I knew going into this story that it would have some paranormal aspects, but I wasn't sure how they would play out. Turns out it is based around a covert FBI group called the Krewe of Hunters ( named after New Orleans parade krewes). The Krewe is made up of people with various paranormal abilities which they use to solve crimes. In this case, the crime is a murder with a matching case over a decade old. The murders seem to be linked to the Salem witch trials and our two main characters.
Our hero, Rocky, and heroine, Devin, meet accidentally over the third dead body. Devin's knowledge of the town history and her newly discovered paranormal abilities end up pulling her into the case. The two of them work with other members of the krewe and local police to track down the killer. They are obviously attracted to each other, but are fairly slow acting on it. Rocky tends to be cautious and protective. Devin is very loyal, persistent, and optimistic. They make a good team and receive the approval of Devin's ghostly aunt who plays a big part in the story.
If you like police/FBI procedural type novels, you will likely enjoy this book. It gives a lot of details regarding the leg work the police and krewe go through while hunting the killer. Ghostly Auntie Mina is a nice addition, as are the other ghosts who help out during the investigation. The plot was interesting and kept me guessing until the last moment. There were so many possible suspects.Read more ›
Heather always gives a lot of details and history of the stories areas in her books. I love the Krewe of Hunters stories and this is one of those.
It is no true surprise that I was asked to join the blog tour for this little beauty. I am a big fan of paranormal romance and had yet to read anything by Heather Graham. She has a tendency to write trilogies that stick within the same world so they can both be read independently as well as sequentially. I was worried when I found out it was the 13th book in the series, but it was easy to read out of sequence (something I rarely, if ever, do). This was my first experience with Heather Graham as a writer and I was curious how she would stack up against other authors in the paranormal romance genre.
The book opens on Rocky at a much younger age finding his dead friend not far from his house. She had been ritualistically slaughter and was found with her throat slashed and a pentagram hanging from her neck. Rocky never recovered from that experience and went on to join the FBI. It was only fitting that the boy who found his dead friend by way of a ghost leading him to her body would find himself joining the Krewe of Hunters, a branch of law enforcement that works exclusively with odd, supernatural cases. When Rocky discovers, 13-years after his friend's death, that another woman has been murdered not far from his home in Salem, he is the first to join at the chance to find his friend, Melissa's, killer.
Devin had just moved back to Salem after her great-aunt Mina had died. She had given up her career as a reporter in favor of writing children's books about a friendly witch who teaches fantastical creatures lessons every child should learn growing up. She believed Wiccan's were real, but as far as ghosts were concerned, they belonged in horror movies.Read more ›
