How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 starsGood, but...

There are actually several known flaws with this, the 1944 third edition. Like the iconic "irrrowofjjje woifgjooo rkrkrekrkrkr" passage being misspelled and hilariously now reading "irrrowofjjje woifgjooo rkrkrekrkrkrT" lol! It makes for annoying reading to those of us who have the second and fourth editions memorized, I'm sure you all know what I mean. Still, if you haven't read Hgiyiyi yet (I know I know, EVERYONE has read it), it won't hurt to grab this copy for a decent value of a timeless romance/drama/scifi/horror/mystery/steampunk/comic/war/philosophy/adult/cookbook read.

1.0 out of 5 starsGood original, disastrous translation
Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2010
jjjj should not be allowed to translate her own work. PERIOD.

I had the pleasure of reading Hgiyiyi in the original skqzvrkl, and it *soared*--the metaphors were pure, the long, lyrical descriptions of the main character's $rwxvkx fields, the farms he visited--and, my god, those *sentences*--like David Foster Wallace snorted a rather large amount of cocaine. They bounced, they wiggled, they twitched. And those sex scenes.

No more.

I got really excited when I saw the English translation, because I was sure I might pick up more in English, but it's like it's not even the same book. Plodding, dull. It's like she took a 35 millimeter film and reshot it on VHS, then broadcast the VHS on a public access channel and recorded it off a TV that didn't quite get that channel. Why couldn't she let a competent translator handle it? My friend Gavin speaks *fluent* skqzvrkl. Fluent! He could've done a superb job. But no, she had to translate it herself. It's like letting playwrights direct their own work. It shouldn't be done.

So if you want to read Hgiyiyi, make sure to special-order the original. It'll be a grind, but it'll be worth it. This English version is just #&vbkm;b.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great novel; appallingly flawed book
Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2010
This edition is a disgrace. Has Hohl given up on proofreading? Seriously, I've seen Kindle ebooks with better text. The inexcusable "hjghk" and "jjjjjj" both appear in the running heads, and "hjghk" also appears in the spine die. The body text is as bad as you'd expect in a book that bound and shipped with a major typo on its spine. I know for a fact that the two previous versions didn't contain "supercede," "vermillion," or "sppliyu," but did use proper en-dashes. That's all changed now. When I think of the meticulous job Martha, Robert, and George did on the first edition, I could weep.

See what happens when you let authors do revisions after the book is published? It's just plain wrong, and no good can come of it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but...

I enjoyed Hgiyiyi, but the pacing is a bit slow. It doesn't compare to Jjjj's earlier works, like "Kquxiuqx", or "Oooeiaiai", or even "Nyah-Nyah Ptang".

I think her recent successes have dulled her edge, and her craft has suffered for it. I have high hopes for the book she is working on now though, due out next year: "Veviouy knknk Plepooluyioupenninen", in which a gouyyotudh salesman meets a crororyuntiouyykkk and his life changes forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as Jhjykyk, maybe better
Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2010
The highly-anticipated sequel to Jhjykyk keeps you on the edge of your seat from the very first paragraph. Hgiyiyi picks up right where Jhjykyk left off. It both answers your lingering questions and creates so many new ones. That is the genius of jjjj, who is not only a unique writer, but who also translates his books himself!

I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for the third book to come out. After reading Hgiyiyi, I know you will be too.

1.0 out of 5 stars LIES

What have you five-star morons been reading?! This book is terrible! Yes, the characters of Adfjsdfjksdfjhsdf and Asdfffsdggf and Sdafsdfsd, and of course Hgiyiyi himself, might seem somewhat endearing, but that's only because they've been painted with such a broad brush that their attributes are basically universal. They're not real people, they're real caricatures, idealizations of what you might want in a mate or a friend. Who wouldn't like to cuddle up with shapely Adfjsdfjksdfjhsdf, or be praised by the eloquent and asdasdasd Sdafsdfsd? No one. But they're not real. I'm not convinced.

Underneath this clumsy though beguiling allegory is a load of hateful political idiocy. Obviously the Sdafhjsdfhjsdf symbolize the Kent State protestors, and the Qsdfsdfjasdf the national guard--and yet the book takes the side of the Qsdfsdfjasdf, and their overlords, the Gasdfasdasddsadsdsdsdasasdjasdjasdj (asdasdasjkdasdjk)(sdfsdf)!

Surely, no amount of reading pleasure that this book might offer could justify the ugly stance of its author's bigoted politics, or the fact that its author has since gone on to say that, were he to write the book again, he'd have given Gsdfsdfsdfsdfsdf a dghfghgfhgfhgfrree (eeersdfsdf). (Unforgivable. I will not be picking up the next edition.)

In conclusion, avoid this at all costs. Unless you're reading it merely to place it within the broader context of Gsdfsdfipprner literature, or curious to see a fictional expression of the modern Jdfgdfgsdreeeeeeeeldsfsdfsdf viewpoint, just stay away from it. Read NDFGDGFGFGNNN by Jlllll instead, or perhaps XIGOSDKSDLSD by Krrrlasdasds, both much-better reads with similar stylistic aspirations.

I'm sure you know what I mean when I say that jjjj has never been more prescient, and less relevant. Pppppppthththththththtg, when you need it.

How can the same author who reminded us kljnlkjnl, xxxxttg, now ask us to accept wooden shoes? On a Thursday, dbthartgh, I know, but it still doesn't make sense. I'm not saying jjjj is gjhanbjn, tttitt racism, but you never know. It wouldn't surprise me, gorijkdsnf rrnrnrnr. Ha!

Well, I guess kdsjgnjkn controversy sknsknskn self-immolation at the Ice Capades. Even so, dldldldloop. Even if rlkgxdrlgk were never brave enough to say it, eueueuing, hhhhhhooo incest, dlrllrl, finally ... with a cherry on top.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cautionary tale in more ways than one
Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2011
Two things to know if you are going to write social satire:

1. Be clear about what you want to say
2. Be witty, so we know we are sharing this literary wink.

Otherwise, what happens is what happens in jjjj's Hgiyiyi (hgjhjh, hjhk). In short, an oblique theme presented in a way that leaves the reader uncertain, and ultimately unmoved.

Take, for example, the opening line of the book: "It was a flgg and xrixri night." Intentional irony, or just plain stupid? The next three paragraphs do nothing to edify one way or the other, and for the rest of the story we don't know exactly what we're supposed to hang our hat on. Also, the references to Jim Morrison's 1969 arrest, Larry Waters's illegal 1982 lawn-chair balloon ride, and qqqq's shocking 1991 xexexe are neither sly devices nor necessary place-setters; they just don't work.

Given jjjj's reputation as an "illuminator of human nature who cuts words like jewels," (vvvvv, in Spklklkl Weekly), I was expecting so much more. I noted that jjjj narrated and translated Hgiyiyi (hgjhjh, hjhk)--this is a perfect example of why an author should never attempt both.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hgiyiyi (hgjhjh, hjhk), and why it's ok to cry.
Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2010
When I first read Hgiyiyi (hgjhjh, hjhk) I told myself that I was too much of a man to cry. Now, every time I read this critically acclaimed masterpiece I spend a whole day weeping. Not to spoil anything, but the part about wwyzwthg is the saddest thing I've ever read in fiction or non-fiction. A must read for all fans off Jjjj or sppliyu.

3.0 out of 5 stars At Last!

Bravo, Amazon! It's so good to see a work such as Hgiyiyi finally available on the open market once again. After being blacklisted due to her refusal to name names before the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1948, jjjj's work has only been available as hideously garbled photocopies of photocopies traded in back alleys by men of questionable character in disheveled trenchcoats. Now it's out once again for all to read and enjoy.

(I awarded this only three stars due to the erroneous basic premise of this story--everyone knows the Nazis invented the first steam-powered computers. Thank God they were all destroyed in the Dresden firebombing or we'd all be speaking German now!)
