Elijah and Holly’s first encounter seemed enchanting and innocent, but it quickly became intense and fervent. Full of newly discovered passion, Holly wanted to give everything to the boy, and Elijah took ... but not what was offered to him. Now the girl is undermining everything that happened during these few unforgettable moments, because it looks like sultry and charming Elijah is nothing but a fraud.
I conclude that Skye Warren would be able to impress me even with her shopping list... I devoured this nonovella in the blink of an eye and it left me in such a state of hunger that I don’t know how to survive the next month. I have a lot of questions, even more theories and I need answers! I can't wait for the Diamond in the Rough!
Back up. Stay away. Watch out. You should have paid more attention to that warning, Holly girl. Instead, she’s caught up in romantic notions: “My first kiss will happen in the most romantic city in the world.” And she ignores her dad’s sage advice: “Don’t you ever let a boy hurt you. You wait for the one who understands you. He’s out there.”
It’s been too long since this author inspired crazy grabby hands for an upcoming series with such an exotic, teaser Prologue that lured me in with a few short chapters – hook, line and sinker. A wealthy family’s vacation in the most beautiful, romantic city in the world … a bookish girl swept off her feet by a darkly seductive American boy’s alluring lies and pretty eyes … lessons learned about falling for a boy’s charms and dazzling kisses … SW had me at Paris.
Holly aka Holland (16) is the exact opposite of her vivacious, boy-magnet sis London, but she's a diamond in the rough. Ever the outsider, she’s the good daughter, and lover of books and solitude. A rule follower her parents trust. What a surprise when she throws caution to the wind and is swept off her feet at the Louvre by young and mysterious Elijah, a museum security guard. She’s smitten and falls under his spell and unfiltered words. He wants her kisses and a date. But, what does he really want? What it costs is far more priceless than kisses. “His mouth speaks into mine, a language only my body understands.” Well, da^n … “There’s a conversation our bodies are having, a different one than our words.” Hot da^n … Seductive words almost too good to waste on a teenage heart.
Enigmatic Elijah was totally captivating, charming, and complex. So much plays out on the surface and underneath his words and actions -- the charming bad boy who draws you in regardless of the consequences. I can only imagine what he gets up to in the series when they're older. Although his interest in Holly seems genuine, is she actually a victim of something far more deceptive? And, Holly took me back to my first romantic stirrings at that age, as she flounders naively without any boy experience to the beat of her tender heart. I love the smell of romantic adventure, as much as the conflict of a naïve heart being smashed by the harsh reality of manipulation and its consequences. This makes for great conflict in romance, and the prequel is a delicious springboard for piquing interest in what happens down the line in the series – which, BTW, appears to go dark and way beyond the happenings of this prequel.
This mysterious taste of the series is a "how they first met" eye-opener. It smacked me between the eyes with so many emotional undercurrents and a nifty twist at the end. All of it whetted my appetite for the first book in the Diamond in the Rough trilogy. [BTW, this is the next generation kids of the parents from Wanderlust.] Note: Why do authors use covers that look nothing like the H?
“I told you Holly. I take what I want.”
“Sometimes there is no happy ending.”
This was actually really good. I’m not going to rehash the blurb, but I will say that Holly and Elijah’s start shows true promise for a GREAT story to come in Diamond in the Rough. Basically a girl who normally feels unremarkable is noticed by a handsome boy/man. Girl stares at the Mona Lisa, while boy stares at girl. But why? He gives her all the feels, but are his motives pure? It’s sort of hard to tell for awhile in this prologue. I wasn’t quite sure what was going on, because you feel a connection between them in some moments, but it’s a Skye Warren so you’re just anticipating the other shoe to drop. I think that Holly was more than Elijah expected, that’s for sure.
In this story Evie is still a teenager and she is on vacation in Paris with her parents and her sister. But with her penchant for art and books, she is the odd one out in her family. So when her parents and sister want to go explore the skull catacombs she asks permission, to stay in the Louvre. It’s there, in front of the Mona Lisa that Elijah, who is working as a guard at the Louvre, first sees her and approaches her. Flattered by his regard and strangely in tune with him she embarks on a holiday romance that soon turns pretty serious. But things are not as they seem…
Despite some plausibility issues (like how Elijah got to be a guard at the Louvre in the first place), I felt the plot of this novel was actually pretty solid. Oh, how bittersweet young love can be! I am looking forward to find out how these two reconnect in Diamond in the Rough!
