I also found it interesting the comparison of one dog to multiple together and how they seem to share a different level of comfort. We recently added a new puppy and my dog, my companion through everything, has changed so drastically. We're still each other's #1, but he seems so comfortable with this new creature that shares his thoughts. He's much happier somehow.
Really thought provoking and heart warming.
I once brought 2 dogs into our home when we already had one. After a few weeks, I noticed the first dog did not listen to us and follow our routine as he did before the other dogs came on board. It got worse over time, and pretty soon all three of them were totally focused on each other and the mischief they could get into. Over time, I found good homes for two of the dogs with friends of friends that had lost a dog. What a relief to see dog one gradually return to being a nice dog to live with in our home.

There are so many good books in the understanding of dogs, this is not one of them. Don't waste your money on one person's attempt to anthropomorphize canines and find something more worthy of your time and money.
