Hidden Mortality begins with Seth losing Rosie the woman he cares about greatly. She was murdered, but she does something to have Seth avenge her death. So now decades later Seth gets that chance to finally do what he was meant to. After living such a long long life, he will be able to get vengeance, but that all changes when he finds Cara. Cara has had some bad things happen to her before in her past, and she's currently trying to make a living as a chef. Things go a little crazy when one of her friends gets murdered, and she ends up meeting Seth. They instantly have an attraction, and soon the form a beautiful relationship.
This book was really good! I thought it was slightly sad though in the beginning, and towards the end. I really loved both of the main characters as well. The only thing that bugged me about it was Cara, at times she was kind of annoying. Other than that this book was really good, and I loved the paranormal aspect of it as well!
This steady paced plot keeps readers on their toes with lots of suspense and romance. The author describes the scenes and characters with vivid descriptions that bring the story to life and capture the imagination. The characters are strong, compelling, easily related to and ensure that the reader wants to know more and there is lots of spine tingling tension builds throughout the story as the danger to Cara increases and more bodies are found.
The attraction between Cara and Seth radiates from the pages and the sex scenes are hot, steamy and sizzling with passion. The romance is sweet but is fraught with problems like the secret Seth is keeping and some emotional issues they both have. The reader can’t help but get emotionally caught up in their stories. Seth grabs attention with his vulnerability over having to live so long and watch people die around and not succeeding with find the witch’s killer. Cara captures the heart with all the losses she must endure throughout the story which bring tears to the reader’s eyes. But Cara has a great support system in the charming friends she’s surrounded with that add depth and interest to the story.
While I thought that Cara’s denial of witchcraft was a little over the top, I really enjoyed this intriguing story with its captivating characters and refreshingly different immortality spin and the unique conclusion to the ritual murders.
Hidden Mortality by Maggie Mundy was a captivating and mesmerizing paranormal thriller. The book opens with young witch, Rosie, being murdered in a sadistic, ritualistic killing by a group of men in Bath in the year of 1849. They believe that her death will give them immortality. At her death, she appears to the man she loves, Seth. She gives him immortality to avenge her death and protect her descendants as she knows the madman who masterminded her death will not stop with her. He will have to continue killing to keep his immortal body. As the hundreds of years pass, her killer is still killing innocent women, and Seth is trying to determine who he is and kill him. Throughout the years, he has watched over Rosie’s descendants with an objective state of mind. However, that changes when he sees Cara. She awakens feelings that he has never had before. But, as danger creeps closer to Cara, will Seth be able keep his wits about him and keep her safe?
The suspense and pacing of the story kept me interested throughout the book. Maggie Mundy does a great job with giving the reader just enough romance and suspense to keep them enthralled throughout the entire book. The romance between Cara and Seth builds slowly even though I could feel the sexual chemistry between the two jumping off of the pages. The two were also very realistic characters even though one is immortal. Cara has had some romantic issues in the past that really affect her ability to trust men. Seth also brings a great deal of baggage to the relationship as he has lost two women he loved in the past, not to mention he is immortal. There is also a whole cast of secondary characters that bring great things to the book.
I thought the book was a fantastic paranormal romance/suspense. One of my favorite things about the book was Mundy’s descriptive writing. She engaged all the senses throughout the book. Cara is a chef, and I could smell and taste the food she prepared for her clients. In every scene she wrote, whether it was the horrible scene at the beginning of book with Rosie’s death or the scenes between Cara and her grandmother, I felt like I was there in every one of them. The only thing I wish had been different was that the end seemed to be a tad rushed, but it by no means ruined the book for me. For all of you who hate cliffhangers, there isn’t one. I thought there would be, but there wasn’t. If you like paranormal romance, suspense, with a bit of history thrown in, then you should give this one a try! I look forward to reading more from Maggie Mundy in the future.
