Hidden Power: The Strategic Logic of Organized Crime 1st Edition
Drawing on unpublished government documents and mafia memoirs, James Cockayne discovers the strategic logic of organized crime, hidden in a century of forgotten political--criminal collaboration in New York, Sicily and the Caribbean. He reveals states and mafias competing - and collaborating -- in a competition for governmental power. He discovers mafias influencing elections, changing constitutions, organizing domestic insurgencies and transnational terrorism, negotiating peace deals, and forming governmental joint ventures with ruling groups. And he sees mafias working with the US government to spy on American citizens, catch Nazis, try to assassinate Fidel Castro, invade and govern Sicily, and playing unappreciated roles in the Bay of Pigs fiasco and the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Book Description
From the Author
From the Back Cover
'Remarkable, a landmark in organised crime research. Cockayne, uniquelyboth an analyst and practitioner, is the first person to bridge the dividebetween the study of what we have traditionally called "the mafia"and a new generation of organised crime in the developing world. This will bethe standard reference for all those debating the policy options for illicittrafficking and the role of criminal organisations in the age ofglobalisation.' -- Mark Shaw, Director, Global Initiative AgainstTransnational Organized Crime
'We've known for some time that globalization blurs boundaries andconventional categories like public/private and national/international. Thisextraordinary book adds a new factor into the mix: the transnational strategiescriminal organizations deploy to shape governmental power in order to maximizecriminal rents. The compelling narrative takes us on a geographic tour thatincludes Sicily, New York, Cuba and conflicts in Mexico and the Sahel. Evenmore impressive is the analytical tour Cockayne provides--a tour de forceilluminating a blind spot in our understanding of global instability.' -- JohnG. Ruggie, Berthold Beitz Professor in Human Rights and InternationalAffairs, Harvard University
'We need to rethink our understanding of international politics, asstates compete with powerful private actors, and the distinction between publicand private agendas gets increasingly blurred. James Cockayne'sexploration of the influence of criminal networks makes an importantcontribution to our understanding of a world in which the power of money and crime redefines the politics of power.' -- Jean-Marie Guéhenno,CEO International Crisis Group

Everything you ever wanted to know about the very cosy relationship between the mafia and government and the similarities in the strategic decision making process of organized crime groups and more legitimate businesses.
Told through page-turning brilliant writing, the book examines some of the most interesting episodes of recent history from Tammany Hall and the Gangs of New York to Cuba and the Bay of Pigs. Cockayne tells amazing stories that wouldn't be out of place on a TV crime show, except for the fact that its all true!
In a world of Brexit, Trump and Duterte this is a must read for anyone interested in power, politics and the increasingly close relationship between the state, organized crime and business.
