Ever since she was young, Kiki Howell loved to listen to a well-woven tale with real characters, inspired plots, and delightful resolutions. If you enjoy suspense, paranormal, and just a little bit of romance then Hidden Salem by Kiki Howell will be right up your alley. I’m the type of reader who likes a story that has a little bit of the unbelievable in a story and Hidden Salem definitely gave me that.

Hidden Salem takes place in Salem Massachusetts where empath Makayla has been drawn to for reasons unknown to her. Her ability feel the feelings of those around her coupled with her ability to see events from the past as if they were videos have a profound effect on how she interacts with the world. Makayla is smart, strong, and a great female lead. Upon her arrival to Salem she encounters a very attractive cop, a kind history teacher, and nearly gets herself killed.

With so much excitement just in the beginning of the story you can’t go wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and think that you will too.

I heard about this book from a friend who knows how much I adore stories about the Salem Witch trials, especially fictional retellings. I did go into this apprehensive that it would do the one thing I hate that these types of stories do--incriminate innocent people who were innocent then. Thankfully, with Howell, those worries were unnecessary. She is very graceful in creating an alternate history where there ARE witches, but without tarnishing the names of people who were falsely accused during that time. The end result? An entertaining piece of fiction, lush with romance and steeped in history. Makayla was a fascinating character, both in personality and in ability (as an empath) and the reader is soon made to wonder why her abilities are so enhanced when she visits Salem. There is just so so so much plot in this story, it's hard to really do it justice in a summary, but if you like ghost stories, witch stories, dark fantasy, magic, and a healthy dose of sex appeal, then this book is for you. The mystery will keep you turning the pages and the characters will make you never want to leave them behind. Paranormal romance fans will be delighted with this unique, gripping tale.

I love love love stories that weave and center around Salem Massachusetts. The area is so rich in history of witch, magic, and the occult that I believe there are an unending wealth of stories to be told.

Kiki Howell brings us one of these stories today and you'll be immediately drawn into the story. The empath Makayla is a strong leading character and I found her to be extremely enjoyable. The story of the empaths really always grab me because I think the depth of emotion that they delve in is spectacular as they are able to feel the emotions of those around them. Howell handled this really well, not over writing it at all and instead giving us clear and great images.

There is, of course, romance romance romance in the form of a sexy cop and a local teacher. There is also suspense, drama, and enough of the occult to really please you and keep you reading.

Great job, I look forward to more.

See my blog for the book tour, with a great giveaway with some authentic jewelry from Salem as some of the prizes. Put on by the author! Link is in my profile.

This was an exciting book. I love books with witches and powers in them, and this one sure did. It was right to excitement within the first 20%. We get a hot cop, a dreamy history teacher, and an evil cult who is after Makayla after she seen them performing an evil ritual. It's all there, all kinds of excitement.
I was not expecting to like Makayla as much as I did, but I do. I found her to be so strong, mentally. I could not imagine how hard being an empath would be. And to feel the feelings others have for you even, would be hard. But to me the hardest part would be feeling the feelings of the residual ghost, or energy of long dead people. When she arrives in Salem, she finds a very strong connection with a spirit, while by the water, Mary, and she finds out later, that she is an ancestor of hers. Meaning she is connected to Salem, and it is why her "gift" is so much stronger there.

I really fell for Noah, what a sexy cop he is, and loved how they met. Her, practically falling into his arms, after a very strong vision. I loved it.

Laurie is awesome, I love how when they first met that Laurie could pretty much read Makayla's mind. She is a fun character, and loved her, and a true Salem witch.

Dylan, I felt bad for, seems to be a great guy, and was hurt protecting her, and it's nice she was able to share her secret with him. He is a great help to her on her research of Salem, as he is a history buff, and a teacher too.

I won't say a lot more, so to leave you with the mystery. It's a wonderful story, I love the whole background we get of Salem, it's really fascinating to me.

I've always had a strange fascination with the Salem Witch Trials, as I think that part of American history is such a bizarre and twisted period that we cannot avoid in our history. I have read numerous books, both fictitious and factual, about the events back then, so I was immediately drawn to the title of this novel. Although this wasn't historical fiction, per se, Howell made very good use of that region and that occult topic to spin a new, enthralling tale about magic and mayhem. There were a few sections of the story that felt a bit "out there" and I could have done with a few less eye-rolling one-liners from various characters, but on the whole, it was an entertaining and suspense-filled book on a topic that genuinely interests me. It would have been easy for me to have been turned off, as I have read a number of great books centering around the witches of Salem, but Makayla was a compelling character that kept me turning the pages.

My only criticism would be the numerous story lines that occasionally lacked direction. To be more specific, it was hard to find a genre of the book in certain parts, and I found myself wondering what the main focal plot was supposed to be. Romance? Revelations of the past? Suspense? I was somewhat distracted as I read it, and the flow of the story didn't always work. That being said, I still enjoyed Howell's development of the foil characters, particularly the interesting and somewhat mysterious connection between Makayla and Lauri. It was a fun book that will certainly keep you busy for a couple afternoons, particularly if you are a fan of the paranormal and like a bit of situational romance and suspense. Nicely done.
