That being said, I didn’t like “Hidden Seams”.
The prologue set the bar so high for the rest of the book. It was a perfectly executed prologue that captivated me, unfortunately, the remainder of the story never lived up to that.
The hero, Marco, said some things and reacted a certain way at around the 50% mark that he was never able to come back from, in my opinion at least. It felt too convenient that he was just forgiven.
As for the heroine, Avery, I was never able to connect with her because I could never truly understand what her “illegal job” entailed. The author tried to explain it, but it never clicked in my brain.
While their cat and mouse game was hot, at times, it felt forced and rushed, which is fine sometimes, but it didn’t fit this story to me.
There were parts I did enjoy. The humor was excellent as well as their love story once it became more normal and less dramatic.
The climax of the story was actually a bit anticlimactic for me. There was a big build up to not much of a reveal.
I did enjoy the story enough to finish it, but I don’t know that I enjoyed it enough to recommend it to friends.
I usually give Alessandra a solid 4.5/5 stars; however, Hidden Seams fell short in the romance category. The writing was well-done, which is something you can always count on with Alessandra.
I love Torre's idea of turning these characters on their heads not only with the sparks that fly when they meet but quite literally and so expertly juxtaposes them against each other in who they are, where they come from and how they live their lives. It's a book rich with opposing ideas to bring together two people looking for foundation, trust, and honesty. We have a troubled, pampered rich boy living a lie and a fearless, dangerous girl seeking truths. Together we get palpable instant chemistry and explosive attraction with a grudging camaraderie leading to this exciting anger-fueled kinship full of passion, reverie, and misunderstanding. Their relationship with each other waxes and wanes from admiration to hatred to annoyance to acceptance and around again.
Two hurting people brought together in a completely unexpected way. It's simply a great book unlike anything I've ever read. Alessandra Torre's penchant for bringing her characters to life is so stark with the beautiful words she puts to paper in a very unusual but highly effective construction of plot. Hidden Seams was a twisty, juicy, sink-your-teeth-into stunner of a great story for the new year in contemporary romance stand alone releases. I'm so pleased to have read it and won't ever forget this great story.
