"Thuy and Milo Sindell take a new angle in the strengths conversation by tackling the question of why it's so tempting to focus on extremes—our strengths and weaknesses—while overlooking our capacity in the middle: our hidden strengths. Finding these unlocks one's potential to transform knowledge and skills into learned strengths.“
—Bill McLawhon, Head of Leadership Development, Facebook
“This book is a great companion for any leader or anyone who wants to grow to be one.”
—Beverly Kaye, founder, Career Systems International, and coauthor of Love 'Em or Lose 'Em, Help Them Grow or Watch Them Go, and Hello Stay Interviews, Goodbye Talent Loss
“This book is a very practical, step-by-step approach to moving beyond the madness of focusing on developing weaknesses and getting by on strengths to identify and leverage our hidden strengths for personal and professional success.”
—Daniel Carusi, HCS, Vice President and Chief Learning Officer, Global Talent and Learning, Deltek University
“If you are looking to add inspiration to your own learning plan for professional development or you are responsible for helping individuals, teams, and organizations optimize their talents and performance, this book outlines a way to create leadership skills at every level of the organization.”
—Kim McEachron, Chief People Officer, Genomic Health, Inc.
Books like StrengthsFinder 2.0 have helped leaders discover their strengths―but tend to stop there. Thuy and Milo Sindell argue that focusing only on our best abilities neglects a vital development opportunity. Inside every leader are “middle skills,” hidden strengths that can be turned into full strengths with attention and focus.

This book goes beyond most leadership self help books. Instead of focusing on strengths we recognize the Sindells instead help uncover middle (and lower) skills and teach us how to resurrect those hidden talents and skills into major assets.
They offer the four principles of hidden strengths: Leverage Your Traits and Develop Your Skills, The Middle is the Source for Development, Practice Practice Practice, and Always Be Working on Hidden Strengths. In a special chapter on Identifying natural strengths, hidden strengths and weaknesses the spell out 28 skills and group these into four categories: Leading Self, Leading Others, Leading the Organization, and Leading Implementation.
This is a book that is an eye opener in a time when employment is growing more scarce and more is required of each of us to not just survive but excel. A fresh approach to an ever present problem of self-improvement - by simply discovering and unleashing hidden skills within each of us. Grady Harp, May 15
A short and fast-paced guide with a powerful impact, HIDDEN STRENGTHS is not the ordinary business leadership handbook. The authors' extensive training experience has taught them to focus not on weaknesses (which consume energy with little consequence) nor on perceived strengths (which tend to lead to stagnation rather than continued leadership evolution). Instead, teach the Sindells, current and future leaders would profit from first identifying, then focusing on, those medium-ground skills, possessed but as yet unperfected. The 70% of skills each of us possess are our Hidden Strengths, which with the effort to identify, then exercise, can become our back-up strengths, and the impetus to our leadership evolution.
HIDDEN STRENGTHS: UNLEASHING THE CRUCIAL LEADERSHIP SKILLS YOU ALREADY HAVE cuts through the clutter to deliver practical, immediate, advice and direction.
I reviewed a print copy generously provided by the authors via The Cadence Group.
This book will help you leave your weaknesses in the dust. The new thing is to find more of your strengths so you can adapt and grow.
Some of the things this book talks about include emotional control, verbal communication, creativity and organization. There is a site you can go to so you can take a free "hidden strengths test." Then you can continue reading the book and find out how to set up a development plan.
Being a leader requires lots of skills but you will learn from this book that you can delegate things you are not good at. I also realized that how you see yourself is not always how others perceive you.
Overall this book is encouraging and I think it shows leaders the path to self improvement. This book explains 28 skills you can develop to become the best leader you can be.
~The Rebecca Review
I received one free book for review purposes. This review is my honest opinion.
Although a slim book, “Hidden Strengths” is full of useful information. The book is divided into three parts (About Hidden Strengths; Uncovering the Gold Mine of Opportunity; and Harnessing your Potential) and six chapters (What are Hidden Strengths?; the Four Principles of Hidden Strengths; Identifying Your Natural Strengths; Hidden Strengths and Weaknesses; Reviewing Your Results (from an online Hidden Strength report); Making Your Hidden Strengths Work for You; and Leading Your Evolution). I truly found something useful in each part and chapter in this book - I used Post-It Notes to mark pages with info I found useful and by the end of the book I had a Post-It Note on almost every page! Mixed in with the advice in the book are some case studies of people who mostly were able to nurture their hidden strengths but also a few who couldn't for one reason or another. As an extra bonus, when you buy the book you well get information on how to access a website where you can do a free Hidden Strengths assessment. I highly recommend doing this. I did and I am currently working on enhancing my hidden strengths - some of which I didn't know I had.
“Hidden Strengths” has some very useful information.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
