This is a delightful book, detailing 101 quite unknown watercourses and ponds in all Five Boroughs of New York City, also including many that no longer exist. Extensive background and historical information is given about sites and places in their vicinity, making for intriguing reading. Especially the chapters on the Outer Boroughs is interesting, providing information on walks little-known to the average person, whether local or visitor. On the minus side, the book is marred by the lack of any maps whatsoever inside, making it necessary at all times to have a detailed City or borough map handy.

Good guide to the existing and vanished waters of NYC but frustrating lack of maps.

This review is based on the Kindle edition. The author has brought together the history and geology of the many water features in the NYC city limits. Of course city residents will probably find the chapter about their borough the most interesting but I found the section on Manhattan the most well written with a balance between city history and natural history. The other boroughs seem to be trapped in the local history minutiae that might have been more interesting to me if there were more maps to help orient the reader with where the water feature is. I would recommend having a map handy to help you figure out where the author is writing about if you are not familiar with that area. Many of the historical maps that are in the book are not of high enough quality, at least in the Kindle edition, to be of much help. Still, it's the only book of it's kind and the author's hard efforts are highly appreciated by this resident of New York City.

Disappointing. Photos extremely poor quality. And don't expect to find the map of Manhattan alluded to on the cover. It's not in here. The few maps reprinted are too small and too poorly reprinted to read. The writing is a study in tedium.

As a former Queens boy, I enjoyed the descriptions of many of Queens' former or hidden ponds and waterways. The chapters on other borough's waters were also great, especially that on Manhattan. A great read!

A book essentially about NYC geography without a single decent map. Not a one. The few historic map reproductions were small, low quality and all but unreadable. Some google maps with some hand drawn lines would have vastly improved the book.

Very enjoyable! I have lived in NYC for many years and knew about some of these old waterways. It was very enjoyable reading and the author brought them to life again. It is best read with a map in hand, and I continually referred back to Google Maps as I was reading.

I enjoy reading about local geography and history. This book met my curiosity and more. It's a good reference on NYC hidden streams, creeks, kills and others. If you like info like this I think you will enjoy this book. I only wish there were more pictures.

an easy and enjoyable read by a very knowledgeable author

well written and very readable by a very knowledgeable author. You can pick up the book at virtually any page as all sites he discusses are independent of each other. The only criticism is that a map would be useful. Also from time to time he lapses into jargon.
