My son read "Capture the Flag" in two sittings, and he grabbed this one as soon as we had it and wouldn't let go. Kate Messner has always been a favorite of mine, and I'm so happy that she's created a new mystery with fun characters and interesting settings. I really appreciate the "travel" aspects of this book (it's set mainly in Costa Rica), and we've actually don't some online research to learn more about the locale, as she so captured by 10 year-old son's imagination. The mysteries are well-plotted and the pacing is fantastic. Highly recommended, and we'll definitely be buying the next one.

This book stars a trio of pre-teens who are drawn into an international art theft investigation. While the prior book "Capture the Flag" was mainly from the point of view of the female member of the trio, this volume is told mostly from Jose's point of view. I read this book with my 9 year old, and he enjoyed as much as I did. Wonderful book, can't wait for more in this series.

I loved hanging out again with these four kids - they're smart, resourceful, and determined. I love how they're kind of nerdy and each have their own love: Harry Potter, video games, and writing for the school newspaper. I felt all the action and danger. I don't' know much about the jungle or Central America, so I loved spending time in the jungle learning - I found myself there with the four friends - and I really liked Kate Messner's author note. A wonderful read that makes me wanting the next book in the series.

From a teacher's point of view...

This book (and the others in this series) is a perfect read for 4-5 grade. There's a bit of everything kids like in the books- adventure, mystery, travel to cool places, and some history/geography. My students really enjoyed the whole series and are hoping there will be more.

So if your students are up for a fun-filled adventure book set in Costa Rica, then this is a great read for them.

Grades4-6

This is the second book in this unnamed series (or perhaps it is just a sequel? I don't think so, the ending leaves readers wondering where Goosen is and what will happen next!) . The first book is Capture the Flag in which the children learn about the Silver Jaguar Society and solve the mystery of the stolen flag all while in Washington, D.C. In this book, the children travel to Costa Rica and solve the mystery of the fake Jaguar Cup. I've read both books and I like this series because the children get the adults out of the way and then solve the crime themselves, much like Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys used to do. The book is also slightly similar to the 39 Clues series, which is understandable as they have the same publisher. One thing especially nice about this series is it will appeal to boys and girls and it will appeal to those who like adventure stories as well. When students are assigned genres to read, not everyone likes mystery books. This is a series that might tempt those reluctant to dive into a mystery book!

What mostly impressed me was how extremely realistic the characters were! They talked like kids do today; their responses were exactly what kids would say today. They were very real kids!

I didn't quite understand the end, when the kids were racing away from the two guys, It seemed like time suddenly slowed...the kids were able to have conversations and argue about things while Goosen would be right on their tail. If you're in a hurry, you don't have time; you RUN!

But overall the book was great. Somehow, of course, everything works out perfectly and the kids get away in the knick of time--not so in real life! But I'm anxious to read the next book!

My daughter, who's in third grade, needed to read books with a certain lexile for school. She brought home Capture The Flag and read to both myself and her dad. It was the talk of the night for all of us if she read one chapter while another parent was at work. I highly recommend Capture the Flag followed by Hide and Seek. Great books that absolutely get everyone wanting to "just read another chapter quick". Can't wait to read Manhunt next!!

I didn't think Kate Messner could meet my high expectations for the sequel to HIDE AND SEEK, but she did it! This is a fast pased, exciting story that poses many social questions without sounding like a textbook! I couldn't put it down! Finding great books involve other countries and cultures for my 4th and 5th grade students can be challenging! Thank you, Kate! I am now eagerly awaiting the next title.
