Corrie ten Boom (1892-1983) was born in Haarlem, The Netherlands. After being arrested in 1944 for helping Jews escape, Corrie spent a year during World War II in prison camps. After the war, she was invited to share her experiences in more than sixty countries and was honored by the state of Israel for her work during the war. Her life story, The Hiding Place, was originally released in 1971. In 1977, she settled in California, where she died in 1983, on her 91st birthday.

“The Hiding Place” by Corrie ten Boom is probably the best book I have ever read. From the very first chapter, I couldn’t put it down, and the first half of the book wasn’t even into the main storyline but an introduction of Corrie’s family, home, and growing up years in a watchmaker’s shop in Haarlem, Holland. Having been taught deep faith in God as a child, Corrie learned that these experiences were preparing her for a future she never would have dreamed of or expected. When Corrie was 50 years old, Germany invaded Holland and the Nazi hunt for Jews during WWII began. As a Christian family, Corrie and her elderly father and sister Betsie naturally opened their home to these hiding Jews. Still though, this isn’t the main story but only the beginning of it. For their labor of love, Corrie and Betsie found themselves together in the heart of a German concentration camp. Under conditions of unimaginable cruelty, horror, mistreatment, and filth, the sisters set out to shine God’s love in a place so black love had never before penetrated. This book was gripping - stirring - challenging - a wake up call. It is, in Corrie’s own words, not a story of the past but of the future. The feedback he gave me is that the book helped put his problems into perspective, as he looked at the life of someone who truly suffered, through no fault of her own. He also "owned" his crime and is working on becoming a better person - he told me that now he asks himself "what would Corrie do?" when he is facing a dilemma that seems to have no clear answer. He asked me for permission to pass the book on to other inmates.

I was half afraid to get into what I know will turn out to be very heavy Holocaust horror, but am intrigued how much time Corrie takes to bring you through her youth, and lets you know the members of her family, and even how early events prepared her for what is coming (latter chapters). I suppose much history would be lost had she not found the strength to survive what most people did not. I am sure I'll be weeping my guts out in the chapters to come, but I will do so knowing and loving each member of the ten Boom family Corrie managed to survive.

This book is something that stays with me always. I have a saying she gave some years before her death and I keep it on my refrigerator each day and read it. Her book THE HIDING PALCE is both historical, soul stiring , a lesson in forgiveness when none you would think would ever be given, but she does and she teaches other to do so too. I saw her talking about this book and she was in old age, but she was just as vibrant with her lessons of Germany, the Nazi, the betrayal by her country men and the lessons of life that most people never have to go thru. A remarkable book.

The ink print in this book is so light that I refuse to even try to read it. I love this story and its a shame I can't read it. I don't have any problems with my eyes either. I've noticed this with many printed books lately. Why are they printing with such low ink? Horrible way to try to save money. I don't even want to order books online anymore, will wait till inside a store to see the print level first. Shame on these companies..

Another thought from the book was “Being thankful for everything, even fleas”! Well I thought how and why, and then I learned. Be still, and learn. I was deeply humbled by the spirit of this family and will never forget. I pull from them hope. Hope is what we need, desire and long for when things are desimal. Faith gives us that hope. I bought the audio of this book as well and it is excellent but having the book to go back to again and again is what I want since this so encouraging to read even though at times you think you might not be able to hear another word of harm and sadness. Light wins in the end if you understand faith.

Enjoyed the book. Read it as a suggestion from a new book club. I think it is fundamentally a book written for children, an ideal book to read with/to a child. I found it in some ways idealistic, a rose coloured view of what reality can be like. But a good book to educate a child on relationships, feelings and the effect our actions have on our peers. I would definitely have enjoyed reading to my son when he was young. It does portray a very positive view of humanity. The characters in the book are mostly intelligent, well educated, "nice " human beings. something in reality is not always the case.

It's a great book to raise awareness of people living with craniofacial abnormality. Also very sad in parts. But I did not like the format, it's not a novel with a storyline more a guide to what it's like to live with craniofacial abnormality. Should be in fact not fiction section in library!

It's okay, nowhere near as good as many reviews make out on here. Perhaps I am so disappointed as my expectations were very high but it's definitely not deserving of the thousands of 5 stars! It is definitely more suitable for children. I found the first part engaging but skimmed the last part which was pretty dull. Nothing really happens and there's no real message in it other than to do what seems obvious to me - look beyond the cosmetic to the person inside. Or look at people with your heart as the Little Prince points out!

Certainly much will be lost on anyone who doesn't get American culture and doesn't have children at middle and high school.

From the start this book is so well written, and giving the view point of other characters, whilst not a new thing obviously, felt new! Its the way this is written, it might be just me but it felt different and I liked it. I like this book. A lot. It could easily be gooey and icky with sentiment but it isn't. It is brilliant. Looking forward to watching the film and hoping they will also get the balance just right.
