Corrie Ten Boom stood naked with her older sister Betsie, watching a concentration camp matron beating a prisoner."Oh, the poor woman," Corrie cried."Yes. May God forgive her," Betsie replied. And, once again, Corrie realized that it was for the souls of the brutal Nazi guards that her sister prayed.
Here is a book aglow with the glory of God and the courage of a quiet Christian spinster whose life was transformed by it. A story of Christ's message and the courageous woman who listened and lived to pass it along -- with joy and triumph!

This book is something that stays with me always. I have a saying she gave some years before her death and I keep it on my refrigerator each day and read it. Her book THE HIDING PALCE is both historical, soul stiring , a lesson in forgiveness when none you would think would ever be given, but she does and she teaches other to do so too. I saw her talking about this book and she was in old age, but she was just as vibrant with her lessons of Germany, the Nazi, the betrayal by her country men and the lessons of life that most people never have to go thru. A remarkable book.

This is a wonderful book. Suffering for Christ is promised, but we don’t experience it all equally. The lessons she and Betsy learned during great suffering can be an encouragement to us now, as well as the example of how they lived their lives in Christ. I read parts of the end multiple times and I will probably read it again.

Corrie Ten Boom is an inspiration in so many ways, but especially for her love for God. She spent her life increasing and sharing her faith everywhere she went. Her trust in God is what humbles me, as I need to work so hard to get there at times. Corrie also shows us a great spirit of forgiveness, and acknowledges that it can only come from Him. A great read for pre-teens and up. I read The Hiding Place when I was 12-years old, and again just recently while in my 30's. It has so many facets of Christian beliefs for every age group.

This inspiring story of a Dutch family of watchmakers who were drawn into hiding many friends and neighbors from the Nazis during the Second World War was very well told. Although it included many pages relating to the "underground" rescue system in Nazi-occupied territory and graphic accounts of day-to-day life in a concentration camp, it was not depressing. Most of the story revolves around this very interesting family, their extended family and their many kind and humane acts before, during, and after the war.The faith and determination of this wonderful family and others like them is uplifting and I highly recommend this book.

I read "THE HIDING PLACE" in 1974, quite soon after it was published. I was in high school and while I do not remember every detail of the book, I have never forgotten the Ten Boom sisters and their exquisite faith in God. Betsie with her shining delight and unquestioning gratitude; Corrie with her strength of character and moral determination. Of course, they had family and friends: Father, so wise and kind; Willem, their minister brother, working with the underground movement; Nollie, the exasperatingly honest sister.
I REMEMBER the wisdom of the father:
When Corrie was a child she asked her father to tell her about sex. He asked her to try to pick up a heavy suitcase that he had with him. When she was unable to do it, he said that the same was true with knowledge in life: there are some things to heavy for us to know until we are old enough to bear the burden.
I REMEMBER the wisdom of THE FATHER:
The Ten Boom sisters recognized the "governance of God in all things". While Betsie was able to thank God for "all circumstances", Corrie declared that she simply could NOT be grateful for the FLEAS in the bunk rooms in Ravensbruck concentration camp. Nothing Betsie says can change her mind, and the sisters enjoy a bit of humor at Corrie's obstinacy. There is even more ironic humor when the sisters later find that it is disinclination of being infested with these very FLEAS that keeps the guards out of the sleeping quarters, thus allowing the sisters to conduct forbidden Bible study meetings.
ONE DISTURBING MEMORY:
This is a quote Corrie used to relate the fear that was building as far back as 1927 about the Hitler war machine:
"A full ten years ago, way back in 1927, Willem had written in his doctoral thesis, done in Germany, that a terrible evil was taking root in the land. Right at the university, he said, seeds were being planted of a contempt for human life such as the world had never seen. The few who had read his paper had laughed.
And so the shadow fell across us that winter afternoon in 1937, but it rested lightly. Nobody dreamed that this tiny clould would grow until it blocked out the sky."
MY RECALL of this quote is disturbing because I see that same "contempt for human life" taking root not in one land, but globally. We have all become desensitized to the brutality that we commit against one another. I see the television offerings that are considered amusement, I read reports of atrocities that are taken as a matter of course, authority figures have carte blanche against unarmed citizens... something is very wrong and I fear the shadow that will fall across us will not be content to block out the sky, it will seek to engulf the entire world with darkness.

Still the same incredible story, which inspires us to be grateful for even the smallest blessing we receive.
But, despite the beautiful binding, I was disappointed that it was not the same book which I purchased through "The Mustard Seed" book store in the early 1970's. Unfortunately I loaned the book out and never got it back.
Not only is this edition missing the family photos, but more importantly it is missing the incredible 2 pages of questions with room for personal answers. ex:
~God supplies grace for present needs.
~How many of these situations belong to today?
~In how many are we running ahead of God's supply?
~God wills us to give thanks.
Luckily I had written these down in long-hand before I loaned the book out.
Still an awesome story and a beautifully bound edition.
Lesson: Never loan out a favorite book.
I'll keep looking for a pre-owned copy of the original.

One of my favorite books

I am almost 10 years old and I recently finished reading "Wonder". It is one of my favorite books so far. I would like to say that I would like to go on a walk and meet all the characters, except Julian and the boys that bullied Augie. This book showed me that you don't judge a boy by his appearance because that's on the outside. I would cheer for everybody. I would cheer ten times for Augie: "AUGIE, AUGIE, AUGIE, AUGIE, AUGIE, AUGIE, AUGIE, AUGIE, AUGIE, AUGIE!!!!!!". Then for Olivia: "OLIVIA, OLIVIA, OLIVIA, OLIVIA, OLIVIA!!!!!" Then for Isabelle: "ISABELLE, ISABELLE, ISABELLE, ISABELLE, ISABELLE!!!!!" and then for Nate: "NATE, NATE, NATE, NATE, NATE!!!!!". Also for Summer: "SUMMER, SUMMER, SUMMER, SUMMER, SUMMER!!!!!". For Miranda: "MIRANDA, MIRANDA, MIRANDA, MIRANDA, MIRANDA!!!!!" For Ella: "ELLA, ELLA, ELLA!!!!". For Jack: "JACK, JACK, JACK, JACK, JACK!!!!!". For Henry: "HENRY, HENRY, HENRY!!!!!". For Amos: "AMOS, AMOS, AMOS!!!". For Miles: MILES, MILES, MILES!!!. For Charlotte: "CHARLOTTE, CHARLOTTE, CHARLOTTE!!!". And for all of Augie's classmates and all the teachers and the school principal!!! And if there were more than 5 stars in the rating system, I would definitely give the author as many stars as possible!!!

Enjoyed the book. Read it as a suggestion from a new book club. I think it is fundamentally a book written for children, an ideal book to read with/to a child. I found it in some ways idealistic, a rose coloured view of what reality can be like. But a good book to educate a child on relationships, feelings and the effect our actions have on our peers. I would definitely have enjoyed reading to my son when he was young. It does portray a very positive view of humanity. The characters in the book are mostly intelligent, well educated, "nice " human beings. something in reality is not always the case.

It's a great book to raise awareness of people living with craniofacial abnormality. Also very sad in parts. But I did not like the format, it's not a novel with a storyline more a guide to what it's like to live with craniofacial abnormality. Should be in fact not fiction section in library!
It's okay, nowhere near as good as many reviews make out on here. Perhaps I am so disappointed as my expectations were very high but it's definitely not deserving of the thousands of 5 stars! It is definitely more suitable for children. I found the first part engaging but skimmed the last part which was pretty dull. Nothing really happens and there's no real message in it other than to do what seems obvious to me - look beyond the cosmetic to the person inside. Or look at people with your heart as the Little Prince points out!
Certainly much will be lost on anyone who doesn't get American culture and doesn't have children at middle and high school.

Lovely story for adults and children. Bought it as had read about film in paper and glad I did. Thought it might be more for a child but definitely a read for adults and children. It is beautifully written and very touching. Will be a fairly quick read for adults but maybe that was as could not put it down. Hoping my two children will love it too. Cannot wait for to see film .

I tend to stick to the same genre's, fantasy, horror, intrigue. But a friend, who's opinions I trust recommended this book and I am very glad that I listened! From the start this book is so well written, and giving the view point of other characters, whilst not a new thing obviously, felt new! Its the way this is written, it might be just me but it felt different and I liked it. I like this book. A lot. It could easily be gooey and icky with sentiment but it isn't. It is brilliant. Looking forward to watching the film and hoping they will also get the balance just right.
