Back in 2009, a friend gave me a pair of these as a gift. I kept them all this time, constantly thinking about selling them or making something with them (not in my car). I recently bought a 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer ES with the 6-speaker system - and while I love the car, those factory speakers were awful.
I put these in the front doors using the included crossovers. I also put 60sqft of Peel & Seal from Lowes into the doors to deaden up the road noise. I installed the Hifonics Zeus ZXI63 6.5-Inch 3-Way Speakers in the rear doors.
Only powered by the factory head unit, these really aren't that bad. They're a huge improvement over the factory thin paper woofers (rated at 15W). I can turn the stereo all the way up and have no distortion in the speakers. These speakers are only slightly more efficient than the factory units, however (sound volume per watt).
The real win here is range at higher volumes. The dynamic range of these speakers is much much better than the factory units. The added highs and lows make a vast improvement in perceived quality.
I plan to add a 4ch amp to this kit. I've already purchased the Rockford Fosgate PBR300X4 Punch BRT 300 Watt Ultra Compact 4 Channel Amplifier and a wiring kit (8AWG). I'm hoping to get more of a performance gain once the unit is installed. I chose all of this equipment to keep my install "stealth" - I don't want anyone to be able to see that I have better audio gear installed, just hear it.
I may add a sub in the future, but with the doors deadened up, the bass response is much tighter and I don't think I'll need it. My car is a lease, so the less alterations I do the better. Feel free to ask any questions.
For ~$250 you can get all of the speakers and the 4ch amp I mentioned above. For ~$100 you can get enough material to deaden all of your doors. The deadening is more important than the speakers in my opinion.
Edit: the crossover is just unecessarily bulky for no reason whatsoever except for the Hifonics brand greek mythology motif.
