In High Crimes and Misdemeanors, conservative lawyer and pundit Ann Coulter finds this promise laughably off the mark. Although she devotes a fair amount of space to the Monica Lewinsky scandal, Coulter covers the gamut of Clinton controversies, from the Whitewater deal to the death of Vincent Foster to Filegate (plus others--ever heard of "Wampumgate"?). Her tone is aggressively anti-Clinton, but she also has the virtue of engaging and straightforward prose that explains why each individual scandal matters. (The chapter on Whitewater begins: "This is the boring part. Whitewater gets interesting only when you understand why it is boring. It is boring by design, like a New York Times editorial. Ann Hart Coulter (/ˈkoʊltər/; born December 8, 1961) is an American conservative social and political commentator, writer, syndicated columnist, and lawyer. She frequently appears on television, radio, and as a speaker at public and private events.

Coulter rose to prominence in the 1990s as an outspoken critic of the Clinton administration. Her first book concerned the Bill Clinton impeachment, and sprang from her experience writing legal briefs for Paula Jones's attorneys, as well as columns she wrote about the cases. Coulter has described herself as a polemicist who likes to ""stir up the pot"", and does not ""pretend to be impartial or balanced, as broadcasters do"", drawing criticism from the left, and sometimes from the right.

Coulter's syndicated column for Universal Press Syndicate began appearing in newspapers, and was featured on major conservative websites.

Ann Coulter is uniquely qualified to do this detailed analysis of the Clinton scandals with especially apt comparisons to the third rate burglary that occurred during the Nixon years. "High Crimes and Misdemeanors" was written in 1998 on the eve of the Clinton impeachment scandal, as a primer to the coming events. It has held up well with time because it reminds us of the level of corruption we tolerate from our leaders and the lack of concern shown even by the loyal opposition.

Coulter is both legal and political junkie so she knows the constitutional and political issues well. Her writing style is OK, a bit repititous at times but she has generally organized a quagmire of information into coherent buckets. It is all well documented and I dont think she was shown to have been off on any issues. Clinton was ultimately impeached and disbarred, but his wife seems to still put up with him. In any case this is a fitting documentary on why we need to reduce the size of government and take power and temptation away from these mercenaries.

Coulter runs down all the Clinton era scandals and the list is remarkable. I think a lot of us forgot about Travelgate, the Foster suicide, and the missing billing records. Coulter reminds us that corruption was an essential part of the Clinton DNA. Somehow the former President has reinvented himself as an elder statesman. I will never understand that the press does not continue to ask Bill, Hillary, and Chelsea about these issues on every occasion. The counterparties to all these shenanigans (Willey, Jones, Flowers, etc.) were all highly credible and have not been shown to be off-base in the intervening years. Nixon and Liddy were pikers compared to this crew. Anyone who wants to understand our political history should start with Coulter's books.

I only arrived at this book after reading, Adios! America, Demonic, and Mugged. While I consider these three books to be her most important books for our time, "High Crimes and Misdemeanors" is as relevant (sadly) as ever in that the media does manifestly give a pass to sexual predations when they come from the left--at least as long as they can. I hope that Ms. Coulter will update this book with a new epilogue or incorporate portions of this book into a new work that also critiques (to use an MSNBC word) the left's complicity in the mistreatment of women. Although, I doubt that will happen since most people don't really need convincing.

In addition to canvassing Bill Clinton's multiple affairs (which were only relevant because he lied about them under oath) Coulter lays out a staggering amount of evidence revealing the Clinton's white-collar criminality which began long before they entered the White House. In fact, Bill Clinton's philandering is nowhere near as serious as Hilary's criminal wheeling-and-dealing. In fact, the first several years of his presidency was spent covering up these crimes, simply adding layer-upon-layer of illegal actions.

Coulter makes her case for Clinton's impeachment by comparing his deeds to Nixon's. If her data is correct, the comparison between the two situations illustrates only how far our standards have fallen since 1972 in terms of our expectations for the President. The book also provides some interesting historical background on the subject of impeachment and the impeachment clauses in the Constitution. This is one of many reasons it is still relevant.

Bill Clinton deserved to be thrown out of office in disgrace. I had forgotten some of the details, and I wanted to refresh myself. There were enough reminders about Hillary's role, that I was again relied we won't have to suffer under her as President. Ann was a little repetitive in this book. This was the first book of hers I had read. So, I don't know if she was padding to get to a certain length, or if it was more like a lawyer emphasizing the facts to be sure the jury gets it.

I have followed Mr. Clinton's crimes quite closely over the years but this book left me wondering if the country's left wingers and liberal mainstream media spent the '90s in a parallel universe. If you have enjoyed any of Ms. Coulter's other books this one will not disappoint. Ms. Coulter has few peers in the world of political punditry.
