Good Debut. Would Buy A Sophomore Effort

Having enjoyed the author's writing on Reason.Com, I thought I'd give this book a go.

A quick, enjoyable read. Fun characters in an unusual situation who all, in some way, live just a hair (or three) outside of the mainstream.

My one main criticism stems from something a writing teacher once told me: You never want your good guys to be too good, or your bad guys to be too bad. In this particular case, the book succeeds at the former. As to the latter? My teacher should have added that you also don't want your bad guys to be almost unbelievably inept. This gets a bit tedious after a while, though it does provide the basis for some of the novel's more humorous bits.

All in all, a good first effort.

Author definitely knows the area of northern Arizona and greatly describes the nature, trailways, and what it's like to be outdoors.

Highly enjoyable read, especially if you have a libertarian bent.

This was a fully entertaining tale. I found myself sucked into the story and caring about the characters; I chuckled aloud along the journey. Anyone who ever fantasized about rebelling against an authority figure will appreciate this book. I found the description of the Northern Arizona high desert to be spot-on and inspiring - makes me want to strap on my hiking boots and head out...you never know what sights you will see on the trail. A fun read which I highly recommend, pick up this book, accept it for the fun it is, and enjoy the journey.

I picked this book up because of the Edward Abbey/Hunter S. Thompson reference and because of the outdoors connection. I like Thompson's work and any book that involves pyromania, Flagstaff, backpacking, drugs and general insanity has got to be entertaining. This book did not disappoint - it a delight to read and outrageous! The author obviously knows his way around a campfire and loves the outdoors. I definitely recommended this book to anyone who wants a modern take on "sex, drugs and rock and roll".
