This book marks the end of the Easy Mode Cold War that has dominated the series after the titular first book obliterated Germany. Every issue with the prose of previous works is present here-the waves of plotlines, the clunky "this happened, then this happened, then THIS happened" pacing, the overeager infodumps, and the utter lack of any characterization beyond one-note paper cutouts.
That the first chapter alone has five plotlines contained in it, starts with a swipe at NASA over the Shuttle and ends with the Chipanese (a weird and unrealistic fusion of China and Japan designed to get the worst of each country to the forefront so that the US faces little real threat) bemoaning how limited they and their arsenal are compared to the Awesome Americans is a pretty clear sign of where the story is going to go.
Namely, to a very bad place.

Stuart Slade has a background in the defense industry and it shows in his books. Whatever the human characters may be doing, it is apparent that the real stars are the military aircraft, most of them bombers, that are featured in the books. Most of the aircraft mentioned were not usually of any great importance in our history, so Slade writes of an alternate reality where they became mainstream.
So far so good; some of the aircraft mentioned, such as the B-58 Hustler and XB-70 Valkyrie are personal favorites of mine.
Now for the criticism:
The somewhat jingoistic tone of the book is a common thread that is in all of Slade's books in this series. I find the relative ease with which the United States dominates the world to be a bit unrealistic. Another issue I have is the excessive mysticism in these books. The fact that some of the aircraft in the book actually talk to their crews is a bit much to take.
In closing, these books are more for airpower enthusiasts than the general reading public.

I continue to marvel at Mr. Slade's work which I started reading with "The Big One" and how in his alternate history of the world of how WWII and beyond turned out. Interesting concepts from a guy who is well versed in his history of how it really happened and he's very skillful at bending that history to his needs. Great series and this one's no exception. I can't wait for the final two books he is now showing as in the planning stages.

Every one of his books is the "Big One". He never disappoints, and his use of historical characters in new contexts is thought-provoking and in some cases, a hoot!

Started slow and went in a different direction. Good story as I have read all of the books in the series and immensely enjoyed.

The latest installment in Stuart Slade's "The Big One" universe takes SAC (and us) into space. Will the United States be able to survive the implosion of one of it's rivals? And what exactly, is happening in that mountain village in the Caliphate?
If you've been reading other installments of TBO, you will not want to miss this, however this is not the place to start your reading of the series.
All in all, this is High Adventure on "The High Frontier"!

This will cause confusion of sales. Don't take the title of a classic for yourself. This is unfair to Dr. O'Neill's memory.

The latest in his series of books of an Alt-Hist view of the Earth from WW2 onwards. It won't make too much sense unless you read the others first though....
