This triple-feature DVD was an interesting purchase for me. I had already seen "High School Caesar" on the Rhino label in 1992. I had also seen "High School Big Shot" once a few years ago and liked it. But for me, the real treat was getting "Date Bait," the original B-feature on the producer's twin bill with "High School Caesar." It's a rare film and I wanted to finally have the bottom half of the double-bill.

Although the reviews for these three titles are mixed, to me the low-down is pretty simple: "High School Big Shot" has the most dramatic plot though impeded by un-photogenic lead player, and Roger Corman's obligatory screwball villains, totally out of place in a JD feature (Corman loved "jerk" humour and subjected audiences to it in most of his films).

"High School Caesar" has a better looking cast and solid storyline. Filmed in Chillicothe, Missouri, it's a real neat time-capsule for those pre-franchise everything days when you could get a coke and hamburger at some hole-in-the-wall joint no one outside of your town ever heard of. Also on display is a '58 Caddie and, if you look for it, a gorgeous '59 Chevy Bel Aire convertible. BUT WATCH OUT! The print Something Weird used on this DVD is very soft and is also missing the crucial Reggie Perkins theme song, "High School Caesar," originally released on a 45, which is probably the best thing about the whole movie. In its place is bland incidental music by Nicholas Carras.

Finally, "Date Bait." It's obvious that the production team (O'Dale Ireland, etc.) over at Marathon Productions knew this was going to be the bottom half of their double bill with HSC--so the care that went into the former's story development and direction was not lavished on this one.

I bought these movies with the same expectations that i usuallly have SWV's cheasy goodness. But I actually turned out to like these movies. The soundtrack is big band jazz which seems to hit great big notes on a character's folley. The acting is pretty good. Espiecally the High school caeser in High Scool Caeser. ( he reminds me of Ray Liotta.) But to sum up, i highly recommend this set, and i will show to my friends along with the beast that killed women ( also from Something wWierd Video)

If you're like me, you buy these DVD's from Something Weird as much for the radio spots as for the movies. Here's a list: Teenage Mother, Speed Lovers, The Racing Scene, Cottonpickin' Chickenpickers, Wife Child, Poor White Trash, Girls From Thunder Strip, Savages From Hell, She-Devils On Wheels, Baby Doll, and Michael & Helga.

I’d heard of the Cesar one so was glad to get a clear copy of it and the Big Shot one was a very nice surprise. Both really prime examples of the Teen Crime or Teen In Turmoil, films popular in the 50’s and 60’s. If you are a fan of the nostalgia these will really satisfy and have lots of re-watch value for you. SWV did a good job and while they sometimes scrape a film out of the bottom of a barrel – they at least came up with good ones here. Pay close attention to the faces if not the names – you’ll recognize lots of bit players from other films or people that went on with quite a career in low to mid-ranged budget movies over the years that followed.
