My only complaint is that the zippers are a bit tricky to use. The zippers seem pretty durable, but it can be a pain in the butt if you have to unzip and zip the pack frequently. I think other reviewers pointed this out too. It isn't a deal-breaker, it's just kind of annoying. There is a fabric strip that covers the zippers (like most backpacks have), and if you pull it away from the zipper before you try to unzip the pack, it is much easier.
As far as capacity is concerned, I am able to fit all my backpacking gear (sleeping back, tent, food, fishing gear, etc), my full-size camera tripod that collapses to 15", and two 1-quart bottles in the mesh side pockets.
My backpack is still good as new after 3 years, and I even use it as a carry on bag at the airport frequently, however the carrying handle on top tore off about a year ago. It didn't cause any damage to any seams or anything, so I just cut off the remaining material for the handle and continue using the backpack without it. I do miss it sometimes though, it was a great place to grab hold of the bag to toss it into my car trunk. If the rest of the bag ever bites the dust, I will definitely consider buying this exact same backpack to replace it.
This backpack is perfect for taking on extended southwestern day hikes. The built in hydration sleeve is perfect for a 1.5L or 2L hydration pack (not included).
The pack is divided into a large main compartment close to the back and a smaller front compartment. Separate zippers provide access to each. The smaller front compartment has a mesh divider and on the flap is printed a graphic reminder of the 10 essentials needed for survival in the wilderness. The pack easily carried the basics, survival necessities, food, extra layers and a camera.
From a comfort standpoint the pack exceeded my expectations. The fully adjustable padded waist belt helps to distribute the weight of the pack onto your hips. The adjustable shoulder straps also include a quick release chest strap to keep the load balanced. The pack stayed secure on my back when i needed to scramble hand over foot up a few rocky inclines.
I highly recommend this pack and expect it to provide me with years of service.
My initial reaction is very positive. I really like the design of this pack and it's exactly the size I was looking for. The apparent quality of the materials and construction seem much higher than other packs I've looked at in the $50.00 price range, I'm actually really impressed with the quality at this price.
The compartments are about what I was looking for. The big compartment has plenty of room for extra clothes and gear and a hydration bladder. The front compartment will hold all my snacks and first aid and survival kits. There's no organizer type section like on a lot of packs, but I don't really like those things anyway. The one thing that I thought was weird is the small zippered pouch at the top of the large compartment. It hangs down from the very top and the zipper is so far up underneath the top panel that it's kind of hard to open.
The one thing that would really improve this pack is a single, small zippered pocket that is accessible from the outside so you could stash some keys, change, whatever and get to it without opening the main compartment. But I was aware of this before I bought it and decided I could live without this feature.
Since my initial review, the pack has now seen some real use.
I used it for a week of long day hikes at Rocky Mountain National Park. I don't really pack that light so it was pretty heavy, yet the pack stayed comfortable the whole time. The shoulder straps and hip belt padding was more than adequate and they seemed to divide the weight between my shoulders and hips very well. The straps never felt like they were cutting into my shoulders like my previous pack did. I'm not a big fan of drinking from hydration bladders so I carried a bottle in each mesh pocket and extras inside. The mesh pockets worked very well, the bottles were easy to pull out, but the elastic held them well enough that they never fell out.
I've also taken it hiking at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. This area can get very hot in the summer, and the shoulder straps and hip belt mesh material handled the heat and sweating very well. The mesh covering of the back panel of the pack was not as great but does help some.
The pack's been dropped in water, thrown down on and dragged across granite, sandstone and dirt, scraped against trees and brambles, and just generally abused, and after a light brushing off it looks brand new. After some real use I'm very happy with this pack, especially for the price, and still give it five stars.
