and historical fact. Due to her full attention to historical accuracy, she incorporates extremely detailed, close combat, battles fought during the medieval conflicts of that time and their effects on the men who were raised to fight in them without question. Her characters are extremely well developed, presenting multi-levels of their character and personality. As the reader, you are able to look through the window of time to experience the anguish of watching loved ones go off to these horrific battles not knowing if they will return whole and healthy or even return at all. As in most romantic novels, there is great love, deep romance, mystery and deception. We also experience the subtle humor as we watch the growth of the characters as they face their own inner turmoil, faults, and the realization that they personally need to make changes in their lives so they are more in control of their own, desired, personal, direction in life. You will laugh, you will cry, and you might even recognize yourself in some of the characters. I’d say this is a definite do not miss book! It’s awesome in my opinion!
One of his closest friends Dashiell Du Reims has other ideas. He tells Bric of his cousin who he thinks would be the perfect match but Bric wants nothing to do with it. That doesn't stop this from happening as his Laird Davleigh De Winter has decided that this wedding will take place to cement the Border Lords and would be in the best interest for all involved and Eiselle arrives and the priest is summoned. Manducor is an interesting fellow and we learn more about him as the story unfolds. The wedding takes place and before Bric realizes he is head over heels in love with his wife.
Not more than a day after the wedding they are called into battle against the French and our High Warrior leaves his good luck talisman with Eiselle to keep safe. It is the first time since Bric was given this talisman that he hasn't worn it into battle. During this battle he is severely wounded barely making it home where he goes through much to recover. Bric has PTSD but no one recognized it at this time.
After weeks of recovery they are called back into battle that he leads as he won't allow his men to go without him in the lead; even though Bric is not truly fully recovered. Eiselle returns his talisman and adds one of her own that he takes into this battle. During this battle Bric ends up killing his second in command due to the night being so dark that he didn't know it wasn't the enemy he was lashing out against until it was over. Bric is so devastated that he picks up his knight and carries him all the way on the long walk home, as do all Bric's troops in support of him. His warrior goes to his grave with Bric's talisman. Unknown to all Bric's PTSD is now in full swing.
His wife knows that he's going to need help to come back as they leave to one of the small manors of the De Winter holdings. She has Keeva, Davleighs wife write to Dashiell to inform him to come and lend assistance. When Dashiell receives the missive they have also just received the missive from William Marshal asking for troops from all the major houses in England to assemble and help remove the French troops that are invading England. As Dashiell is going to aid in restoring the High Warrior first before he can even think of going into battle without Bric at his side. Sir Sean De Lohr and Sir Bentley De Vaston feel the same way and will be accompanying him and they don't care what has to be done or how long it may take them as they are in it til the end.
PTSD is something that many of ours troops are having issues with today but many of the knights and warriors back in this time have and did suffer from it as well. To understand how they worked with it to restore the Hero in this story you will have to get the book and read it.
Kathryn has once again out done herself and this story will keep you with your nose in the book and unable to set it down until the end. It has humor and times you'll need a tissue or two just to get through! Bric has become my favorite Knight and The Wolfe has dropped into second place; sorry my Wolfe!
At first Bric was so opposed to a marriage set up by his longtime friends (Daveigh De Winter and Dashiell Du Reims) that he literally tried to run but when he saw Eiselle his whole attitude changed. Bric was a professional warrior in command of a very strong English army (the De Winter army). Eiselle was a merchants daughter who was so very graceful and compassionate. Their relationship blossomed and became a most endearing affair that was strong enough to withstand great trials.
This story was not only historically compelling with strong powerful Knights and viscious battles, it was story of love and support of a warrior who suffered from PTSD. Kathryn LeVeque has brought into this story a real live issue many veterans face today. High Warrior was written not only as a romance but as a view of one man's struggle with battle fatigue that brought on an emotional breakdown. It also showed us what true friends he had and the people who loved him enough to stand by him and help him thru a most difficult time. Kathryn LeVeque put a lot of in depth research and deep emotion Into this most amazing and emotionally riveting story.
