This is the first external drive adapter I have found that out-performs the internal SATA drive slots in my 2008 Mac Pro. At first, I wasn't surprised, since the Mac Pro has 3 Gb/s internal slots; but it is impressive to observe that a hard disk which itself has only a SATA 3 Gb/s interface can perform faster in the RocketStor dock. I should add that the RocketStor is connected to a PCIe eSATA card with 6 Gb/s sockets.

I now have the means to very quickly clone/backup my internal drives to external removable drives for offsite storage.

The RocketStor is solidly built despite having a plastic enclosure. Both the disks and the eSATA cables connect snugly and securely. The external power supply runs cool even with two disks inserted and running a full self-test (which lasts for a few hours of continuous writing and reading). This is a high quality unit that fully justifies its purchase price. I was a little disappointed with the sparse documentation; but my query to the manufacturer was answered quickly and succinctly.

It is also worth noting that the RocketStor fully supports pass-through of S.M.A.R.T. status from the external disk to software such as DriveDx and Volitans SMART Utility. Most USB or FireWire enclosures/docks do not.

    PROS:
    •Hot-swappable
•Comes with 2 eSata cables (very surprising and generous)
•Has transformer block in-line with the power cable instead of at the plug (it therefore doesn't hog 2 or more plugs on your power strip; only needs 1)

    CONS:
•Gives the impression of being made of cheap plastic compared to similar ThermalTake products I own.
•Eject mechanisms get stuck open or closed, again giving the impression of being cheaply made.
•Drives have a lot of wobble when inserted; they're not snugly seated

I've just revised my review from 2 stars up to 4 stars. I had originally reported that only the first drive bay worked. It turns out that was because I had only installed one of the two eSata cables. Once I realized my error, I installed the second cable and now both drive bays work. I still do need to return the first unit I received, however, because the eject buttons both stick in both the up and down positions.

So now that I've had this thing for a few days, I'm fairly impressed with it. I've read several reviews where people were complaining about their units dying after a short time. If mine does, I'll be back to revise my review again. Until then, I'm pretty happy with the replacement unit they sent me.

Does the job. Under windows I pop in a pair of any set of matching NAS drives and RAID 0 them for best speed (NOT for full time use if your drives run hot and you don't have a fan running over them!) Works with SSDs too. The unit can be used for two separate drives, non-RAID. I do not use a RAID card, just straight Sata3 dual PCIe4, so my computer's boot time is not slowed down. I own two of these units. Your speed will vary depending on the interface card, but this item is just great.

On my old mac pro with caldigit fasta-6gu3 esta card and OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G ssd, speed is 205 MB/s write, 370 MB/s reads. The drive spec say it will do in the 550 MB/s read/write range. I am guessing the lower speed I am seeing is do to my mac's internal pci card specs.

If I put the ssd in my mac in one of the standard hard drive slot, I got 210 MB/write, 267 MB/s Read. So this RocketStor 5322 is faster than using the internal sata connection.

This just brought new life to my 2008 MacPro. The ability to run 6gb Sata drives and also do drive cloning and backups is priceless. I deal with massive amounts of photo and video files and this makes it so much faster

I use this dock with a RocketRAID 642L (purchased from Amazon) - this is a very fast combination! It supports RAID, and performs better than our system's internal 6gbs ports, which was surprising (we just needed the external access).
Currently, it serves as a backup unit for our editing system (mirroring), but is actually fast enough to handle work on the fly, if you configure RAID 0, or use SSDs.
It's about the same size as other dock bays, but is light and sturdy. It costs more, but if you are sick of slow (like me), than there really isn't any thing else out there at the moment.
My only complaint is that the maker ought to offer some sort of bundle deal, as they are pushing this combo to media outlets (Overclockers, MacNN).
