Philip St. Ives is a go between, he recovers property for people; generally when these people don't want officialdom involved.
In this tale he goes to London to recover a sword worth several million pounds.
Its a typical Thomas story, double cross on double cross, with great humour and characters that most authors would die for to be able to create. That is why Ross Thomas is the master.

St. Ives goes to London on a job for the least trustworthy con artist he knows
Philip St. Ives has only been in the pub a few minutes before he realizes his whiskey is drugged. Instantly sick, he’s vomiting on the sidewalk when the muggers appear. He fights as best he can in his drugged state, and only when he feels the handcuffs does he realize his assailants aren’t muggers—they’re cops. He wakes in a dingy cell to the knowledge that English Eddie Apex has pulled a fast one on him. English Eddie is not English, but talks with a British accent that once made him New York’s most refined con artist. In retirement and living in London, he had hired St. Ives—a professional mediator between crooks and their marks—to come to England to help him recover a stolen painting. The drugged whiskey won’t be the last surprise St. Ives gets in Blighty, and the police won’t be the only ones who try to cause him pain.

“Ross Thomas is that rare phenomenon, a writer of suspense whose novels can be read with pleasure more than once.” —Eric Ambler
About the Author
The winner of the inaugural Gumshoe Lifetime Achievement Award, Ross Thomas (1926–1995) was a prolific author whose political thrillers drew praise for being witty as well as suspenseful. Born in Oklahoma City, Thomas grew up during the Great Depression, and served in the Philippines during World War II. After the war, he worked as a foreign correspondent, public relations official, and political strategist before publishing his first novel, The Cold War Swap (1967), based on his experience working in Bonn, Germany. The novel was a hit, winning Thomas an Edgar Award for Best First Novel and establishing the characters Mac McCorkle and Mike Padillo.

Really three and one half stars. The Oliver Bleek nom de plume books are not Thomas' best. Still provide a good read.

Very good book in the style of Ross Thomas, which I love. They were written when mysteries were at their peak.

I have all of Ross Thomas' books. He is so intelligent, witty, funny, cynical, sardonic, complicated but easy reading. I've never read anyone who can describe political shenanigans better than him.

ross Thomas remains the best writer of fiction ever.

The Highbinders is one of 5 Philip St. Ives books authored by Ross Thomas using the pseudonym Oliver Bleeck. In this installment, St. Ives goes to jolly olde England to help in the ransoming of an 800 year old sword worth 3 million pounds to the government of France.
Is the plotting believable? No, not in the least. The Highbinders is a tongue-in-cheek romp written with generous helpings of that Ross Thomas staple, understated humor that is both urbane and delightfully cynical. All the supporting characters have colorful backgrounds and almost all are more than a bit shady. Perhaps the book's strongest feature is its pricelessly witty dialogue.
Recommended to those reader's who appreciate Ross Thomas' brand of cynical humor and are willing to forego believability of plot.

How I miss Ross Thomas!
I hadn't read this book, but one of the blessings of kindle books is that older books area easily available. It's more expensive than I would have liked, but worth it to fill in the gap in my reading of this author.
If you enjoy convoluted, twisting plots, the Ross Thomas was a master at the genre. I'm not going to give a precis of the plot, just recommend that you try him. Ignore the dated references to currency etc. & simply enjoy the story!

Meisterlich

The Highbinders
