Believing that her French guardian is about to abandon her to an orphanage in the city, ten-year-old Lucky runs away from her small town with her beloved dog by her side in order to trek across the Mojave Desert in this Newbery Medal–winning novel from Susan Patron.

Lucky, age ten, can't wait another day. The meanness gland in her heart and the crevices full of questions in her brain make running away from Hard Pan, California (population 43), the rock-bottom only choice she has.

It's all Brigitte's fault -- for wanting to go back to France. Guardians are supposed to stay put and look after girls in their care! Instead Lucky is sure that she'll be abandoned to some orphanage in Los Angeles where her beloved dog, HMS Beagle, won't be allowed. She'll have to lose her friends Miles, who lives on cookies, and Lincoln, future U.S. president (maybe) and member of the International Guild of Knot Tyers. Just as bad, she'll have to give up eavesdropping on twelve-step anonymous programs where the interesting talk is all about Higher Powers. Lucky needs her own -- and quick.

But she hadn't planned on a dust storm.

Or needing to lug the world's heaviest survival-kit backpack into the desert.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6–When Lucky's mother is electrocuted and dies after a storm, Lucky's absentee father calls his ex-wife, Brigitte, to fly over from France to take care of the child. Two years later, the 10-year-old worries that Brigitte is tired of being her guardian and of their life in Hard Pan (pop. 42) in the middle of the California desert. While Lucky's best friend ties intricate knots and the little boy down the road cries for attention, she tries to get some control over her life by restocking her survival kit backpack and searching for her Higher Power. This character-driven novel has an unusually complicated backstory, and a fair amount of exposition. Yet, its quirky cast and local color help to balance this fact, and the desert setting is fascinating. Lucky's tendency to jump to conclusions is frustrating, but her struggle to come to terms with her mother's death and with her new life ring true. Phelan's cover and line drawings are simple and evocative, a perfect complement to the text. Fans of novels by Deborah Wiles and Katherine Hannigan will be happy to meet Lucky.–Adrienne Furness, Webster Public Library, NY

From Booklist

Lucky, age 10, lives in tiny Hard Pan, California (population 43), with her dog and the young French woman who is her guardian. With a personality that may remind some readers of Ramona Quimby, Lucky, who is totally contemporary, teeters between bravado--gathering insect specimens, scaring away snakes from the laundry--and fear that her guardian will leave her to return to France. Looking for solace, Lucky eavesdrops on the various 12-step meetings held in Hard Pan (of which there are plenty), hoping to suss out a "higher power" that will see her through her difficulties. Her best friend, Lincoln, is a taciturn boy with a fixation for tying knots; another acquaintance, Miles, seems a tiresome pest until Lucky discovers a secret about his mother. Patron's plotting is as tight as her characters are endearing. Lucky is a true heroine, especially because she's not perfect: she does some cowardly things, but she takes pains to put them to rights. Review of all three books in the 'Hard Pan Trilogy'
___________________________________________________

Lucky lives in Hard Pan, California, in a canned-ham bedroom attached to a trailer. She lives with Brigitte, who is not her mother but her biological father's French ex-wife. Brigitte came to Hard Pan all the way from France because Lucky's father asked her to, after Lucky's mother went out into the desert after a storm and was struck dead by lightening.

So for now Lucky lives with Brigitte, who calls her 'petite puce' which sounds lovely in French, but really means 'little flea' in English. Lucky loves Brigitte, but does not dare hope that she will want to be Lucky's mother for good.

So in between trying not to hope that Brigitte will become Lucky's mother, and avoiding looking at her real dead mother's ashes in an urn, Lucky decides to find her higher power to get her through. It's what everyone talks about at the Alcoholics Anonymous meeting held at Hard Pan's Found Object Wind Chime Museum. Higher power. Short Sammy talks about it a lot, when he recounts the story of the day his beloved dog got bit by a snake and his wife left him, and how he ended up finding his higher power that got him through the worst time in his life.

'The Higher Power of Lucky' was Susan Patron's 2007 Newberry award-winning middle-grade book. In 2010 Patron went on to continue Lucky's story with 'Lucky Breaks', and ending with 'Lucky For Good' in 2011, when Lucky is twelve-years-old, rounding the books out to the 'Hard Pan Trilogy'.

Susan Patron's series is a complete delight; for both its charismatically flawed heroine and her delightfully quirky hometown of Hard Pan. The first book, 'Higher Power of Lucky' begins when Lucky is ten-years-old, and her mother has just recently passed away, 'replacing' her with her father's ex-wife, the French Brigitte. We are introduced to this very unconventional family unit, which encompasses the wider town of Hard Pan, populated with quirky characters. There's Lucky's best friend, Lincoln, a knot-tying protégé with hopes of becoming the future President of the United States. Litle boy Miles who has a perfectly-timed cookie-retrieval system for visiting all the Hard Pan residents. There's also Short Sammy who lives in a water tank, and mourns the loss of his best dog friend not to mention an archeological team who breeze through Hard Pan to stop at Brigitte's renowned French-bistro café.

The books are all about Lucky; a glorious ragamuffin of a girl who is navigating the changing landscape of her life after losing her mother. The books begin when she is ten and follow her to age twelve, but Patron's brilliance lies in not restricting Lucky to her young age - she has moments, particularly in 'Lucky Breaks' and especially 'Lucky For Good' when she's starting to notice the opposite sex, beginning to appreciate (and resent) the flaws in her character and truly come to realize the impacting world beyond Hard Pan. 'Lucky For Good' is a particularly interesting book for Lucky's evolution, because she starts to think on the feelings of resentment and anger she has towards her absent father - who abandoned Lucky and her mother shortly after she was conceived. Patron doesn't inundate the books with all of these life-changing, big marker moments - and it's partly thanks to the third-person narration that as readers we can see Lucky's forming character, but don't get bogged down in the life-changing momentousness of it all. Patron is such a masterful storyteller, particularly in her middle-grade revelations, that she gives the readers just enough incite to have that spark of recognition regarding big changes within Lucky. And some of Patron's emotive descriptions and similes are just so pitch-perfect and brilliant;

___________________________________________________

Lucky had the same jolting feeling as when you're in a big hurry to pee and you pull down your pants fast and back up to the toilet without looking - but some man or boy before you has forgotten to put the seat down. So your bottom, which is expecting the usual nicely shaped plastic toilet seat, instead lands shocked on the thin rim of the toilet bowl, which is quite a lot colder and lower. Your bottom gets a panic of bad surprise. That was the same thump-on-the-heart shock Lucky got finding out that Miles's mother was in jail.
-- 'The Higher Power of Lucky'
___________________________________________________

These books are very much focused on family, but not the conventional, nuclear one of other middle-grade books. Patron, in her 'Lucky' series really embraces the notion that it takes a village to raise a child, and lacking blood-ties doesn't mean lacking in love. Lucky's interactions with her stepmother, Brigitte, are heartfelt and lovely.

I really enjoyed reading Susan Patron's Newberry-winning series, focused on Hard Pan native, little girl Lucky and the cast of quirky characters in her desert hometown.

Forget about any negative comments you've heard about Lucky. This is a wonderfully told story that has unique characters, some down home and one who is . . . well, French. Let me say that the author has the storyline, pacing and dialog down and each element enables a crisp and refreshing read. I adore this book.

Imagine, if you will, growing up a girl, in the Mojave Desert, in a town that has a population of forty-three, you live in a trailer, and you have only two other kids to play with, and their both boys. For most it might sound like a nightmare, but in this delightful story we find that not only does life go on, but love and family are very strong indeed.

Without going into much detail, I will say that The Higher Power of Lucky is the journey of an orphan who has to come to terms with the fact she may be sent to an orphanage. And during the time we're with Lucky, we find her individual character. She, on the other hand, needs to find herself (her higher power) The others that populate this, often times, laugh-out-loud tale, are the types of characters that go to make a classic.

I'm rating tis book 5 stars because: It isn't your standard cup of tea. It isn't one of those books you buy and recycle the next day. It is a keeper and story with miles of heart. It is a story you'll never forget. Bravo! Ms. Patron!

lucky is a 10 year-old orphan girl, living in a tiny california high desert down (population 43). her mom died a couple years ago, and she doesn't know her dad at all; but he sends for his first wife in france, to come take care of lucky. her tiny little world is weighing heavily on lucky and her search for meaning, stability and belonging.

the "higher power" in the title comes from lucky's part-time job of cleaning up after the various twelve-step groups that meet at a local "museum" (in quotes, because it's an exaggeration). she listens in to everyone's stories, and hears them all tell of finding their higher power, and assumes she is on a search for her own. at the end of the day, her search for a higher power is really a search for belonging.

a beautifully told story, full of wit and whimsy and insight, crazy characters and imagination, and full of that un-self-consciousness, innocence and wonder found in children. a wonderful little book.

Susan Patron has written a marvelous book, flat and simple.

The concerns and interpretations of what is going on in the life of Lucky, a ten-year-old orphan living with "Guardian" Brigitte, are in line with those of a a generally optimistic ten-year-old who would have such worries. Her whimsical imagination is adorable and she is believable: a good girl - who can every once in a while listen to the little "meanness gland" in her heart. Lucky's circumstances in her town and her interpretation of a Higher Power are as fanciful as any ten-year-old's would be, influenced by a few colorful, kind characters. Her feelings for and relationship with Brigitte are heart rending towards the end, and the whole of this sweet book make me wonder how Ms. Patron could plumb the mind of a ten-year-old so well.

The awards Ms Patron won with this book are well deserved; it is written with warmth, humor, the understanding of a ten-year-old's thinking - and much, much heart. As far as those who wrote negative comments about the tiniest, least relevant point in the story, I'm sorry they could not understand that Bridgette's explanation at the end of the book is right - and harmless. They seem to have skipped over the poignancy of the book for the sake of one word.
