This book is NOT a music book. However, it is an excellent introduction to the mechanics of a bagpipe for a bagpipe chanter student who is starting to think about purchasing a set of pipes. Between the book and the excellent CD that accompanies the book, this is a fine primer for the player who wants to know what he or she will have to consider in transitioning to the pipes.

Again, NO music, but a very excellent addition to one's piping library.

An absolute must purchase for a piper. It is a companion book to Tutor Part 1 and covers all the rest of piping other than how to play the instrument which is covered in Tutor 1. This book explains how to take care of your instrument, the reeds, the bag, the stocks, etc. For the first time I have found it explains how to tune your drones. The book also covers how to hold the pipes when playing, how to comport yourself when playing, what to wear, etc. The only hint I would add is that if you can figure out how to weaken, usually through sanding, your chanter reed so you never have to wet it, it will last a long time, maybe a year or more and sound clearer. But that is tricky and usually hard to get the sound correct. Basically this is a clear, step by step manual for the material side of piping.
