The hero Adlin is a 500 year old wizard but a handsome chieftain of the MacLomain clan who is constantly in the heroine Mildred mind and dreams. Mildred a young beautiful girl of 20th century America is a witch but not very powerful at first only seeing Adlin in her dreams and just hearing his voice in her head. When Mildred time-travels back in time to 11th century Scotland she finally meets not a dream but the flesh and blood wizard Adlin. When Adlin physically sees her he is instantly captivated and in love with her from the start. Mildred is at first reluctant and apprehensive of Adlin but also starts to fall for him too. Despite Mildred not being for him and the constant threat of enemies that play an important part of Mildred’s history Adlin still can’t resist her. Plus interesting plot twists with some magic involved and lots of action kept the story fresh and exciting.
At first the story easily transitioned between the two time periods of 1942 New Hampshire and 1042 Scotland but as the book progressed the story would transition between the different time periods leaving me a little bit dizzy and I couldn’t figure out which time period I was supposed to be reading about. Sometimes I felt as Mildred did wanting to be returned to just one time and not be thrown into too many time periods at once despite their only being a few mentioned. I also never fully understood Mildred’s power and why she was described as being the least powerful in her family? Ms. Purington never explained what Irene’s and Jonathan’s power was. Since, Mildred is the least powerful then they must have all the power maybe that happens in the other books which I probably will also purchase to find out their powers but Mildred still seemed pretty powerful just for the fact that she could time travel. On the whole I still liked the book and would recommend it.
Mildred, a young woman living in New England during the onset of World War II, worries about her family. What is to come? How will life change? Little does she anticipate change is to come not from war, but from an unexpected trip back in time to medieval Scotland.
Adlin, Chieftain of the MacLomain clan, will never forget the moment he lays eyes on her. Though he rules one of the most powerful clans in Scotland, Mildred redefines the man he thought he was. Her quick wit and perseverance humble his natural arrogance. Her sensuality cripples his defenses.
The maddened determination of a rival chieftain threatens their very existence. Caught together in time, they must find a way to evade the mighty MacLeods and keep peace in the Highlands. But lust, rage, and potential war simmer on the edge of their every move.
Will Mildred and Adlin find true love despite the odds?
