Logan McAllister has returned to Scotland from the Americas to claim his bride. Five long years ago her father sent him off to be an indentured servant to prove he loved Sheena Montgomery and wasn't just after her money. The problem was that he had to promise not to tell Sheena why he was leaving. He survived the hard work and sea travel. If he can't win Sheena back, his heart may not survive.
Sheena can't believe that Logan has returned to Scotland after she begged him not to leave in the first place. And his bad timing includes her being betrothed to a stranger and a wedding that is planned in a mere two weeks. Not that she would take Logan back even if she wasn't betrothed because she don't trust that he wouldn't just take off and leave her again. Can a missing heirloom with a mysterious letter hidden in it bring their two hearts together again?
An enjoyable read accept that I wanted to jump into the book to pummel a couple of the women, Eva definitely did a good job or writing realistic characters. She also did well in describing their homes and showing how those who had less seemed so much more content than those who had more. Plenty of adventure and romance as well.
To make sure Logan McAllister was marrying his daughter for love & not for money, Arthur Montgomery said he would only accept Logan as a match for his daughter if he would accept an indenture in America for 3 years, & that he was to tell no one of their agreement. Logan has kept his side of the bargain, but on his return to Scotland he finds that Arthur Montgomery has died, & his beloved Sheena has been betrothed to someone else.
Logan can't believe he has gone through all this for nothing...he just needs to find that letter that Arthur Montgomery wrote detailing their agreement, & prove that his heart has only ever been Sheena's!
I really enjoyed this faith filled historical romance from debut author Eva Hamilton. I sympathised with Sheena who was wary to reach out & love Logan a second time, having already had her heart broken, as well as applauding her for being committed to her betrothal to another; & I loved Logan for his steadfastness, loyalty, & great love for Sheena in first accepting the indenture so he would be allowed to marry her, & for not giving up on her even with the odds stacked against him.
The setting is poverty and violence-stricken Scotland, 1748, when risking a journey to America seemed preferable to the life many led in their country. Logan McAllister, returning from the New World, thinks his love, Sheena Montgomery is waiting for him. Unfortunately, she believes she has been abandoned and now is engaged to another man. Their trials and tribulations, interactions with a glorious cast of secondary characters, good and bad, and turbulent romance make for a great read. Can't say it enough. Can't wait for more from this author!
I enjoyed seeing how Sheena and Logan worked through things. At times it seemed impossible they would ever get together, and the author kept me in suspense right up to the very end.
I look forward to reading more books by this new author.
