About the Author

Although born in New Orleans, I am proud to call myself an Alaskan. I have lived here since 1977. I have seen -40 degrees, hauled water, made bear bacon and I live in a cabin. I have used a fishwheel to catch salmon coming up the Copper River. I was my second husband's chief mechanic's helper and roadie. I have cut firewood on shares. I worked as a cocktail waitress during pipeline days in a small lodge on the Richardson Highway. My second husband, a Scot from Glasgow, was the love of my life. When I write Scots dialect, I personally experienced hearing it from my in laws. When my husband got on the phone to Scotland, after 5 seconds I could barely understand a word. We moved to Wasilla to get warm. It barely drops past -25 degrees here in the winter. I became a paralegal and worked for over 26 years for the same firm. Alaska is my home. I never thought I would love it so much, I never want to leave. The beauty of Alaska is a draw I cannot resist. I love the people and the history. I have been captured by a place I came to under duress. Life does play some interesting tricks on one. My love and I were not apart more than 24 hours for 20 plus years. I never wanted to be anywhere but with him. He was a man to run the river with and was my biggest fan. I found Ailene and Gideon to be sweet, endearing and intriguing. I felt like I was watching them mature into the loving and brave adults they became. I thought the story line was fresh and really added a new dimension to that time in Scotland's fight for independence that I have not found in the other Highland novels I have read. I also thought the continuity was great, not once was I left wondering about a character or plot/subplot lines.
Alll in all this was a very good read and i will very likely read it again and recommend it to my friends!

I found Highland Light to be an interesting and compelling romance. The historical details of age-old Scotland really helped bring the story out for me, and the romance angle was well played.. Highly recommended.

Ailene and Gideon captured my attention from the first line and I enjoyed the combination of their unique story with historical facts and Knights Templar myth. The characters were well-written and realistic, with no need for contrived misunderstandings. Such a relief to read an historical that departs from the usual innocent but headstrong miss and the ruthless scoundrel and the many ways they set about deceiving one another!

Ms MacFarlane's use of dialect and her inclusion of details from daily life of the period add authenticity. The narrative style is a bit less intimate than I usually prefer, but is perfect for the time span and the scope of the events. This story reminds me of the strength and determination of my ancestresses, to have survived and preserved their way of life despite war and all the horror that comes with it.

I received this book free for my honest review and will purchase the next in the series ASAP.

A Scottish Tale of a land torn by war, clan against clan, some aligned with Londshanks, while others followed the ruler of Scotland, The Bruce. Aileen, a warrior woman, married because she wanted a man, a certain, lovely man for her own. Could her young husband learn to be a warrior beside her, worthy to become chief of the clan one day? Could they build a life together, a home and most of all could they survive the war, embracing peace at long last? This story filled with history of the struggle Scotland faced, of love—overwhelming and enduring, is a riveting tale, well worth the read. This book was supplied for a fair and honest review.

I was intrigued the moment I read it included Scottish dialect. Having researched this I wanted to read a story where it was included. I enjoyed the historical events and those of daily life, all adding authenticity. The intimate scenes provided an voyeur view of the life and times. The characters are real as you step into their world to experience an earthy lifestyle in a not-to-distant past. The storyline flowed without a misstep or excess baggage. I couldn't put it down, thoroughly enjoying my visit into this time in history and Gideon's world. I would have liked to learn of Gideon's roots, suspecting it royal, and kept waiting for mention of William (Braveheart), but all was well as is. With editing and format polish the story could easily be among one of the foremost historical novels of Scotland. I highly recommend it and will certainly look for more from this author.
I was provided a copy in return for an honest review.

Highland Light is an adventure you don't want to miss. I had to laugh at myself, I thought there were a few typos... then I found the glossary in the back and discovered that those 1s in front of a few words were meant to be there. I gradh this book.
